Worksheet Objectives:

2. Apply the structural frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The facts of the situation is that there is a “Fixer Upper” project for a family that the
company wants to take on but the family’s budget is not realistic to what they need. The
family consists of a husband (Andrew), wife (Kim), a wheelchair-bound 10-year-old
daughter (Lily), and 5-year-old son (Dillion). The family recently experienced a
devastation from a recent hurricane and they lost their home. They have been living with
family members but they need space for their children. The company has $500,000
available to allocate to this project and charity for this family in need. The situation at
hand is to work with the clients to find a home in an area they want, renovate the home
for the needs of the family, make sure the home is wheelchair accessible, and stay under
budget as $500,000 is the most the company can spare.

The role I will represent is being a Project Manager. The home renovation business
involves working with clients to find the “Fixer Upper” of their dreams, buy, renovate for
client needs, and reveal the final product within the client budget. As the Project
Manager, I will be facilitating the housing projects and working with the clients, interior
designers, contractors, and other stakeholders to make the experience as smooth as
possible. According to ProjectManager.com, during a remodel, you’ll find that
discoveries, surprises, change orders, or redesigns will affect scope and then budget. To
remain effective, the project manager must communicate and secure decisions or
verifications as soon as possible.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

The organization is comprised of Magnolia LLC, founded by Chip Gaines and Joanna
Gaines, that has a plethora of businesses under that umbrella in Waco, Texas. Many of
these businesses include an in-person shopping experience, products in major stores, a
home remodeling television show, and a cooking enterprise with a television show and
cookbooks with accompanying cookware (Magnolia Blog). This corporation is a

representation of country-living. Simplicity and self-sufficiency is the foundation. While
there are many businesses involved with this LLC, I am going to focus on the home
renovation sector.

The overall structure of the organization is using the home renovation and interior design
expertise to be able to provide a unique custom experience for client’s trying to find and
improve their dream home. This organization does a lot of charity work and commonly
raises extra funds as well as personal business funds (such as the $500,000 allocated to
the situation). The organization having a priority of giving back to the community makes
the situation I mentioned above an obvious project to take on. The funds are coming
straight out of the pockets of the business funds without taking out funds that would harm
the health of the business.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.

If an alternative course of action was required, that would mean the the company may not
have enough funds to pull off this project or the funds may need to be put elseware. If
this problem occurred, I, as the project manager, would connect with the community that
the organization has been serving for years. I would create low budget charity funding
opportunities within the community to put together funds and I would reach out to local
organizations to see if funds can be gathered. Because this situation for the family having
a home is very urgent and important, I would work with whatever means are available.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

With the information we have, I wouldn’t plan to do anything differently as the project
manager of this situation. The situation is similar to client funded home renovation
projects that have been completed by the organization beforehand. The funds are
available to take from the organization without harming the financial health of the
organization and the scope of the project is an easy task for myself to work with Chip and
Joanna Gaines and the trades that have worked with the organization for years.
