PCA-Human Resource Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the human resource frame
2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The facts of the situation is that there is a “Fixer Upper” project for a family that the
company wants to take on but the family’s budget is not realistic to what they need. The
family consists of a husband (Andrew), wife (Kim), a wheelchair-bound 10-year-old
daughter (Lily), and 5-year-old son (Dillion). The family recently experienced a
devastation from a recent hurricane and they lost their home. They have been living with
family members but they need space for their children. The company has $500,000
available to allocate to this project and charity for this family in need. The situation at
hand is to work with the clients to find a home in an area they want, renovate the home
for the needs of the family, make sure the home is wheelchair accessible, and stay under
budget as $500,000 is the most the company can spare.

The role I will represent is being a Project Manager. The home renovation business
involves working with clients to find the “Fixer Upper” of their dreams, buy, renovate for
client needs, and reveal the final product within the client budget. As the Project
Manager, I will be facilitating the housing projects and working with the clients, interior
designers, contractors, and other stakeholders to make the experience as smooth as
possible. According to ProjectManager.com, during a remodel, you’ll find that
discoveries, surprises, change orders, or redesigns will affect scope and then budget. To
remain effective, the project manager must communicate and secure decisions or
verifications as soon as possible.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

The human resource frame in project management is one of the four frames that are used
to understand the organizational structure and management of a project. This frame
focuses on the individuals that make up an organization and forming meaningful
relationships with them. It is reaching our goals through relational intentions and
investing in opportunities that will provide growth and development for the team. Human
Resources is a huge aspect of this situation. It will require the knowledge and expertise of
the organization’s team to make sure this project is completed and completed well. While

1
the funding is available, there is not room for major mistakes and the home must be
functional and practical for the family’s needs.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

Using a home renovation team full of contractors, a designer, and trades workers will
make this project possible with a full scope of knowledge that the team can provide. The
budgeting piece, talked about in previous assignments, is handled. Now it’s about doing
the project successfully. People don’t need to be outsourced necessarily because most
needed resources are already a part of the major organization’s team.

As far as an alternative course of action regarding the case, it has a lot to do with risk
management. Once the home is established and the renovation process begins, it will be
about making sure that everyone is done correctly and well. The client’s daughter is
wheelchair-bound. Making wheelchair accessible accommodations is a requirement of
the project. If that is overlooked, the project is automatically a failure for the needs of the
client’s and unliveable. Using the construction knowledge of the team, there should not
be a need for alternative actions but it will require strategic planning and use of all
resources available.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

The human resource plan is an important aspect of a project management plan that relates
to the individual members of a project’s team. It includes identifying needed team
members, assigning roles, and tracking professional relationships between staff members.
The HRM plan is based on the project schedule, which includes a summary of the effort
by human resource category (expressed in person hours, person days, etc.) that will be
required to perform defined work units, as well as the time frames during which the work
units will be performed.

The only thing that I think I would consider when this frame was mentioned is the
knowledge of the team doesn’t necessarily include knowledge of what a wheelchair
accessible home requires as far as ramps, bathroom accessibility, etc. It makes me
consider if that is something I should say is communicated directly with the family about
or if outsourcing a professional on those needs is the best course of action.
