Interpreting Standardize B Coefficients

Vartanian: SW 540

Note: Use the standardized B estimate only when using interval/ration scale
variables.

OTHRACE 7330.006 606.536 .220 12.085 .000
a Dependent Variable: AFDCINC

For a one standard deviation increase in the maximum welfare payment in the state, it is predicted that
AFDC income will increase by .140 standard deviation units. For a one standard deviation unit
increase in the number of children in the household, it is predicted that AFDC income will increase
by .430 standard deviation units. For a one standard deviation unit increase in the number of years
of work experience, AFDC income decreases by .057 standard deviation units.

KIDS -.312 .043 -.158 -7.184 .000
OTHRACE -.448 1.099 -.008 -.408 .683
a Dependent Variable: FIPL

FIPL=Family Income relative to the Poverty Line. 1=at the pov line. 2=twice the poverty line.
A 1 SD unit increase in the number of kids decreases FIPL by .158 SD units. A 1 SD unit
increase in the number of years of work experience increases FIPL by .104 SD units.
