Design Calculation Note

1. OBJECTIVE

This note presents the design calculation of the PT slab on grade of 1F (frozen storage)
of Logistics Vinh Loc project.

2. GENERAL

2.1 Reference document and Code

- Design specification and Reference document:
The Post-tensioned Slab on Ground Pavement designed will be based on
Design Loads Criteria, Sub-grade, Ground and Material Properties provided by
ICC.
 Slab thickness 180/250 mm
- Code: AS3600 – 2009 : Concrete Structures
TR 34: Concrete industrial ground floors ( a guide to design
and construction)
AASHTO 1998: Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges
22TCN223-95: “ Áo Đường Cứng Đường Ô Tô – Tiêu Chuẩn
thiết kế”

2.2 Design Model

The slab has been modeled with the Cedrus program, finite element software for
plate analysis. The program has a built in design, which is used only to provide the
bending moment due to loads. Detail calculations are done manually to account
for other load conditions.
The element mesh, boundary conditions and attributes are shown on the graphs
on next pages.
Plate element
Isotropic is chosen for post-tensioned slab on grade.
Support:
In program, supports are in form of area supports (see next pages).
Area support is used to model the support for vertical deformation of sub-grade
indicated by sub-grade reaction (k).

3. DESIGN CHECKING ASSUMPTIONS

3.1 Materials
Concrete
i. f’c = Concrete Compression Strength at 28 Days = 30Mpa
ii. f’y = flexural tensile strength at 28 Days = 3.2Mpa
iii. f’y = flexural tensile strength at 96 Days = 3.2Mpa
iv. Concrete Shrinkage Rate at 56 Days = 700 Microstrain
v. Concrete Elastic Modulus = 29000Mpa
vi. Concrete Poisson Coefficient = 0.15
vii. Coefficient of thermal expansion = 0.0000108
Sub-grade properties
The current 1F is SOG with RC design, as confirmed by client the current 1F
can carry the live load of 30 KPa. The new design, client want to change the
level of 1F by adding 1m thick well compacted sand. Considered Subgrade of

Design Calculation Note

the sub-base under the Post-tensioned Slab is 320mm thick well compacted
sand : CBR = 20%,
Design CBR = 20 % (Refer Figure 6.2 of TR34); The Modulus of Subgrade
Reaction (kpa/mm) = 70 kpa/mm.
Conservatively adopt a modulus of Subgrade Reaction of 0.5 by 70 = 35
KPa/mm.
Equivalent subgrade modulus (k): 35 Kpa/mm
Prestressing Steel

High strength low relaxation seven wire strand class 1860

According to ASTM A416-88 Grade 270.
Nominal diameter Ø = 15.2 mm
Nominal area Ap = 140.0 mm2
E-modulus Ep = 195’000 N/mm2
Nominal tensile strength fpu = 1860 N/mm2
Nominal yield strength fpy = 1670 N/mm2
Relaxation after 1’000h at 70% Pult 2.5 %
Minimum breaking strength Pu = 260.0 kN
Wedge draw-in = 6 mm
Friction coefficient, µ = 0.2 rad-1
Wobble factor,  = 6.6 E - 4 m -1
Australian value = K/ µ = 3.3 x 10-3

Reinforcement
For PT slab on grade high yield deformed bars shall be used for all bars with:
Nominal yield strength fy = 390Mpa
Elastic Modulus of steel Es = 200 000 N/mm2
3.2 Load Cases (LC)
The following load cases are considered:
LC1: Dead Load 24 kN/m3 (on whole plate area)
LC2: Dead Load 8.0 kN/m2 (20cm thick concrete slab & 18cm
insulation layer on top of SOG - on whole plate area)
LC3: Distributed Load 30 KPa or concentrated load of 100kN over 0.9x0.9m.
(We have the 18cm insulation layer and 20cm RC slab on top of SOG, assumed
the concentrated load of 10 tons over 0.9x0.9m for SOG design)

Temperature Gradient/Effects

Temperature gradient between top and base of slab = 0.02 degree C/mm.

Ground/Slab Friction Factor

A nominal 25mm bedding sand with 1 layer polythene is detailed under the
concrete slab.
Hence Friction Factor adopted = 0.5

Post-Tensioning
Tendon type: VSL S6-n bonded slab Post-tensioning system.

Logistics Vinh Loc
Design Calculation Note

The initial stressing force at active anchorage is 80% Pu for S6-n slab tendons. A
wedge draw-in of 6 mm is considered.

Design Calculation Note

4.4 Design checking

The criteria must be satisfied: under the most adverse load conditions the tensile stress in
the slab is not sufficient to cause cracking.
ft  fp  fF  fs  - ( fT  fL)
ft = maximum allowable concrete tensile stress
f p = effective prestress
fF = subgrade friction stress loss
fT = stress due to temperature differential
f L = stress due to concentrated load
fs = stress due to differential shrinkage

Two load conditions will be considered:

(A) Post load P = 6 tons on 0.75m x 0.75m inside main body of slab.
(B) Post load P = 6 tons on 0.75m x 0.75m adjacent to Movement Joint. Slab edge
modelled as free edge.
Use Finite Element Analysis Program (Cedrus) to model the loads and get Design
Bending Moment Stresses and Bearing Stresses as output
Use VSL Design Program to work out the quantity of Prestress required.

Summary of Input into FEM program as follows:

 Slab Thickness = 180mm

 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction = 35 KPa/mm
 Concrete Properties as detailed in Section 3
 Design Loads as detailed in Section 3
 Strip Width = Radius of Relative Stiffness = L
The Radius of Relative Stiffness is an estimation of the “area” of the ground that is
affected by the loads.
L = { Eh3/12(1-√2)k}0.25
H = 180mm Thick Slab
√ = 0.15 Poisson’s ratio for concrete
k = 35KPa/mm Subgrade Reaction
E = Elastic Modulus of Concrete = 29000 Mpa
L = 833mm

Design Output Summary from VSL Slab on Ground Design Program

Design Input into VSL Slab on Ground Program.
 Concrete Slab Thickness
 Concrete Properties as per Section 3
 Post-tensioning Properties as per Section 3
 Assumed unlimited load repetitions: Stress Ratio = 0.5
 Subgrade Friction Factor = 0.5

Note: Only Internal Slab considered. The design moments are 1.4 the
internal moments . This is catered for by the edge thickening increasing the
capacity at the edge. There is no temperature gradient stresses as at the
edge the slab is free to “curl”.
