Design Calculation Note
1. OBJECTIVE
This note presents the design calculation of the PT slab on grade of 1F (frozen storage)
of Logistics Vinh Loc project.
2. GENERAL
3.1 Materials
Concrete
i. f’c = Concrete Compression Strength at 28 Days = 30Mpa
ii. f’y = flexural tensile strength at 28 Days = 3.2Mpa
iii. f’y = flexural tensile strength at 96 Days = 3.2Mpa
iv. Concrete Shrinkage Rate at 56 Days = 700 Microstrain
v. Concrete Elastic Modulus = 29000Mpa
vi. Concrete Poisson Coefficient = 0.15
vii. Coefficient of thermal expansion = 0.0000108
Sub-grade properties
The current 1F is SOG with RC design, as confirmed by client the current 1F
can carry the live load of 30 KPa. The new design, client want to change the
level of 1F by adding 1m thick well compacted sand. Considered Subgrade of

Logistics Vinh Loc
Design Calculation Note
the sub-base under the Post-tensioned Slab is 320mm thick well compacted
sand : CBR = 20%,
Design CBR = 20 % (Refer Figure 6.2 of TR34); The Modulus of Subgrade
Reaction (kpa/mm) = 70 kpa/mm.
Conservatively adopt a modulus of Subgrade Reaction of 0.5 by 70 = 35
KPa/mm.
Equivalent subgrade modulus (k): 35 Kpa/mm
Prestressing Steel
Reinforcement
For PT slab on grade high yield deformed bars shall be used for all bars with:
Nominal yield strength fy = 390Mpa
Elastic Modulus of steel Es = 200 000 N/mm2
3.2 Load Cases (LC)
The following load cases are considered:
LC1: Dead Load 24 kN/m3 (on whole plate area)
LC2: Dead Load 8.0 kN/m2 (20cm thick concrete slab & 18cm
insulation layer on top of SOG - on whole plate area)
LC3: Distributed Load 30 KPa or concentrated load of 100kN over 0.9x0.9m.
(We have the 18cm insulation layer and 20cm RC slab on top of SOG, assumed
the concentrated load of 10 tons over 0.9x0.9m for SOG design)
Temperature Gradient/Effects
Temperature gradient between top and base of slab = 0.02 degree C/mm.
A nominal 25mm bedding sand with 1 layer polythene is detailed under the
concrete slab.
Hence Friction Factor adopted = 0.5
Post-Tensioning
Tendon type: VSL S6-n bonded slab Post-tensioning system.

Logistics Vinh Loc
Design Calculation Note
The initial stressing force at active anchorage is 80% Pu for S6-n slab tendons. A
wedge draw-in of 6 mm is considered.

The criteria must be satisfied: under the most adverse load conditions the tensile stress in
the slab is not sufficient to cause cracking.
ft fp fF fs - ( fT fL)
ft = maximum allowable concrete tensile stress
f p = effective prestress
fF = subgrade friction stress loss
fT = stress due to temperature differential
f L = stress due to concentrated load
fs = stress due to differential shrinkage

Design Calculation Note
Note: Only Internal Slab considered. The design moments are 1.4 the
internal moments . This is catered for by the edge thickening increasing the
capacity at the edge. There is no temperature gradient stresses as at the
edge the slab is free to “curl”.

Subgrades may be either natural ground or some form of fill.
They should provide uniform support and so hard and soft
