DESIGN OF TIMBER STRUCTURES TUTORIAL

• Design one of the intermediate Deodar timber joists used in the timber roof of a hall from
the following data;
Spacing of joists c/c 50 cm
Clear span of the joist 2.0 m
Bearing at each end 8.0cm
Dead load of roof covering 200kg/m2
Superimposed load of roof 150kg/m2
The roofing material consists of wooden planks which supports asbestos sheets.
The timber is of standard grade and shall be used in inside location.

• The cross-section of a suspended timber flooring system is shown in Fig. 1. It consists of

tongued and grooved (t & g) boarding with a self-weight of 0.15 KN/m2 and carries a
plasterboard ceiling of 0.2 KN/m2. The floor has an effective span of 4.0 m and is
subjected to a domestic imposed load of 1.5 KN/m2. Design the timber floor joists using
timber in strength class Cl8 under service class 1.
If the joists are to be notched at bearings with a 72mm deep notch, check that the notched
section is also adequate.

• The timber roof purlins spanning 3m, supports a total medium uniformly distributed load
of 0.15 kN/m excluding their own weight. Using timber C16, what size of purlins is
required if they are spaced at 600mm.The bearing length is 100mm.Check the adequacy
of the section under bending, deflection, shear and bearing.
