Exercise 1: (8pts) Stoichiometry

10g Iron (Fe) reacts with 0.2 moles of excess sulfur (S) to produce iron sulfide (FeS) according to the
following unbalanced chemical equation:
Fe + S → FeS
Give: M(Fe)=56 , M(S)=32
1- Balance the chemical equation to represent the actual stoichiometry of the reaction.
2- Calculate the mass of iron sulfide (FeS) produced.
3- Determine the mass of sulfur (S) remaining after the reaction.
15.4g of iron sulfide was obtained and measured at the end of the experiment using a digital balance.
4- Calculate the percent yield of the reaction.

1- The equation is balanced.

Fe + S → FeS

2- Since there is excess sulfur, the limiting reactant is iron (Fe).

According to stoichiometry:
nFe n Fes
=
1 1
Number of moles of Fe n= mass of Fe / molar mass of Fe
= 10.0 g / 56 g/mol
= 0.180 mol

n of FeS produced = n of Fe consumed

= 0.180 mol × 1
= 0.180 mol
mass of FeS produced = n of FeS produced × M of FeS
= 0.180 mol × 88 g/mol
= 15.8 g
Therefore, 15.8 g of iron sulfide (FeS) is produced when 10.0 g of iron (Fe) reacts with excess sulfur (S).
3- n of S consumed:
According to stoichiometry:
nS reacted n F e (limiting)
=
1 1

Chem160 Quiz Stoichiometry Nov 20, 2023
n of S reacted= n of Fe consumed × 1
= 0.180 mol × 1= 0.180 mol
n remaining of S =n initial of S – n of S reacted
= 0.2 mol - 0.180 mol
= 0.02mol

4- percent yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100%

= (15.4 g / 15.8 g) × 100%
= 97.46%

Exercise 2: (2pts)
Balance the following equations:

1- KMnO4 + H2C2O4 + H2SO4 → MnSO4 + CO2 + H2O + K2SO4

2- C6H14 + O2 → CO2 + H2O

2KMnO4 + 5H2C2O4 + 3H2SO4 → 2MnSO4 + 10 CO2 +8 H2O + K2SO4

K 1x2 2
Mn 2  1x2
S 1x3  3
C 2  1
H 2 + 6  2
O 8 + 4+ 12=  8+2 + 1 +4=

C6H14 + 19/2O2 →6 CO2 + 7H2O

2 C6H14 + 19O2 →12 CO2 + 14H2O
