Interior design is
defined as the
professional and
comprehensive
practice of creating
an interior
environment that
addresses, protects,
and responds to
human needs
(Livspace, 2020).
Architecture and interior
design are both very
functional disciplines of
design, but the interior
of a space can very much
affect one’s psyche.
Biorealism by
Richard Neutra
A theory he “devised out of
the attempt to weave theories
from biological sciences into
a therapeutic unity of
harmonious surroundings”
(Havenhand, 2019)
The needs of the occupant shape the
way an interior will function, but
the way an interior has been
designed can impact the occupant’s
daily living as well. Together,
these two entities co-exist.

In conclusion, Minimalist
Interior and Industrial
Interior are the most widely
known.

This does not mean, however,

that these two trends are the
most preferred among
respondents.
The two styles that were most popular among
respondents were Mid-century Modern Interior
and Bohemian Interior.
Today, Minimalist Interior is
oversaturated.

Additionally, the popularization of

this specific style can be
attributed towards the rejection of
nostalgia, due to how it may present
itself as the "very antithesis of
the new" (Helfand, 2005).
Furthermore, Bohemian
and Mid-century Modern
embody louder
personalities in
comparison to its
counterpart, Minimalist
Interior.

The focus on simplicity

and functionality is a
parallel we may observe
in America before the
Second World War.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

study either came from online
surveys among college students.

All the data collected has been

kept confidential.

RESPONDENTS’ PREFERENCE WITH
THE INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS.

Minimalism was not popular

among the respondents

Mid-century style is
considered to be the most
prefered interior style
among the respondents

Mid-century Modern
Interior design is popular
because it offers a
timeless, versatile and
nature-inclined aesthetic.
Looking back has allowed everyone to see the potential in trends that have
already passed. It may be speculated that the necessity of isolation and
quarantine has pushed everyone to reminisce about a time before the pandemic.

This is especially apparent among the trends within Generation Z as most of the
current trends are based on vintage trends.

Just as the birth of Mid-century Modern created a new wave of innovation due to
the rise in technological innovations after the industrial revolution, design in
its entirety has opened up to a wide array of possibilities to the point where
creatives of different mediums are inspired to be more open-minded and inclusive
in what they create.
