FLUID POWER

DMFD 2413 SEMESTER 1 SESSION 2019/2020

1.0 Objective

At the end of the experiment, students should be able to:

a. To observe system behavior when Check Valve and Pilot Operated Check Valve are used.

2.0 Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes (LO) Program Outcomes (PO)

LO2: Recognize the basic components and PO2: Identify and analyse well-defined
systems used in fluid power technologies in manufacturing engineering problems.
terms of its construction, symbol and
principle

3.0 Background

A hydraulic drive system is a quasi-hydrostatic drive or transmission system that uses

pressurized hydraulic fluid to power hydraulic machinery. The term hydrostatic refers to the
transfer of energy from pressure differences, not from the kinetic energy of the flow. The six
basic components of a hydraulic system (Figure 1):-
a) A pump – supply pressurized fluid to system
b) A reservoir – keep fluid to be used in the system
c) An electric motor – drive the pump
d) An actuator – convert hydraulic power into mechanical power
e) Valves – to control fluid direction
f) Piping – carries pressurized fluid from one location to another

4.0 Hydraulic Components

Identify the hydraulic components below which will be used in this exercise.

Table 1: List of components

Part No. Hydraulic Component Quantity
1 Hydraulic Power Source 1
2 4/3 Way NO DCV 1
3 Double Acting Cylinder 1
4 Check Valve 1
5 Pilot Operated Check Valve 1
6 Pressure Gauge 1
7 Emergency Push Button 1
8 Pressure Relief Valve 1

5.0 Task

Using the given components (Table 1) and layout (Figure 1):

a) Design a schematic circuit which will operate a double acting cylinder for extension
and retraction stroke with check valve/pilot operated check valve to control the cylinder
motion during retraction.
b) Connect components to match the schematic diagram.
c) Draw the hydraulic circuit diagram complete with appropriate symbols.
d) Observe the operation of both systems. You will be required to answer questions (in
U-learn) based on the working principle of the operations.

6.0 Conclusion

Conclude what you have learned from this experiment.
