1. The firing order of two-stroke five-cylinder inline diesel engine is I-II-IV-V-III. The
adjacent cylinder centrelines are 80 cm apart. Each cylinder has a connecting rod 100
cm long and a stroke 40 cm. The mass of the reciprocating parts in each cylinder is
150 kg. Determine the magnitudes of primary and secondary unbalanced forces and
moments when the engine runs at constant speed of 240 rpm. Use analytical method.

Note: For calculating secondary forces, you can assume = , where the notations
are having their usual meanings. The rotation of the crank is clockwise.

2. Using the concept of direct and reverse crank investigate the state of unbalance (only
primaryforces)of a two-stroke nine-cylinder radial engine. The centrelines of the
cylinders are at a uniform angular interval.

3. During the field balancing of a cooling tower fan, the measurements taken are listed
in the table below. Determine the two possible values of .

4. A machine of 100 kg mass is supported on springs of total stiffness 700 kN/m and has an
unbalanced rotating element which results in a disturbing force of 350 N at a speed of 3000
rpm. Assuming a damping ratio of 0.2, determine
(a) the amplitude of motion due to unbalance
(b) the transmissibility
(c) the transmitted force.
(10)

5. It is found from a plot of the response of a single degree-of-freedom system to an initial

displacement that at time t the amplitude is 40% of its initial value. Two periods later the
amplitude is 10% of its initial value. Determine an estimate of the damping ratio.

6. An airplane rudder tab showed a resonant frequency of 30 Hz when vibrated by an

eccentric mass shaker weighing 1.5 kg. By attaching an additional weight of 1.5 kg to the
shaker, the resonant frequency was lowered to 24 Hz. Determine the true natural frequency of
the tab.
