FLORA TO THE RESCUE!

by Sujatha Jaishankar

The sky was still dark.

The flower-farms in the villages however, were bustling

with activity. The flowers were plucked and packed and
taken to the stations for Flora the flower-train to deliver
to the big flower-market in the town early every morn-
ing.

Flora and driver Ace had

been delivering flowers for
many years. The clear sound
of the horn followed by the
‘ding-ding-ding’ of the bell
was the signal for farmers
to be ready to load their boxes and baskets quickly, for
there were many stations to stop at!

‘Load up quickly please! We have a time to keep!’ driver

Ace would say.

But...time was something driver Ace was struggling to

meet. The little flower-train needed a lot of repair, but
no money was available to buy the parts to repair her!

Flora and driver Ace did their best, but there were days
when the flowers did not reach the town market in
time.

‘Look at the time! Flora’s late again!’

Some farmers were grumbling that the time had come

to retire Flora...and driver Ace. People in the town grum-
bled too. The flowers they wanted were not there.

The grumblings grew louder, until one day, Flora and

driver Ace were replaced by a new train and a special
driver to run it! Everyone was happy, except driver Ace
and Flora!

Flora was parked in the station yard. Driver Ace cleaned

her every day. He felt sad she was not running. He
missed the morning rides very much.

Meanwhile, a big flower show was being planned in the

town market. All farmers were invited to participate. The
best display would win a prize!

All the farmers were excited! Everyone wanted to win

the prize!

Two days before the show, something terrible hap-

pened! The driver of the new train fell sick! No one else
knew how to run that train!

What to do now? The show was in two days! Everyone

was confused.

Then one farmer decided to ask driver Ace if he could

help. Driver Ace pulled out Flora’s repair list from his
pocket.
‘Get these parts for me and Flora will be ready to take
you all to the town for the flower show!’ he said.

‘Call the town planners to get these parts immediately!’

said one farmer.

‘The parts are on their way!’ said a town planner an hour

later.

‘Here are the parts you want driver Ace,’ said a farmer.
‘Can you get her ready on time for us?’ he asked anx-
iously.

‘Yes I can! Flora will toot her horn and ring her bell as
usual...right on time!’ he said. ‘You just be ready at the
stations for us!’

Driver Ace began working on Flora’s engine. He worked

day and night and did not rest at all! He tested Flora’s
engine several times to be sure everything was fine.

The village farmers and the town planners were anx-

ious. Would Flora run? Would the flower show happen?

Of course it did, with GREAT success! Flora and driver

Ace made sure that all the farmers taking part reached
town right on time!

Visitors from other towns came. They wanted flowers

for their markets too! The village-farmers were very hap-
py to deliver flowers to other markets too!
Now...both Flora and the other train are busy-busy-busy
delivering flowers to more towns! Everyone is happy! Es-
pecially Flora the flower train and driver Ace!

Mother Duck And The Fox
By Lakshmi Navin Sherman

One day, a mother duck and her ducklings

were on their way to a lake. The ducklings were
having fun following their mother around and
quack-quacking as they went.

Suddenly, the mother duck noticed a fox out in the

distance. ‘Children, hurry to the lake!’ she yelled.
‘There’s a fox!’

The ducklings ran to-

wards the water. The
mother duck was won-
dering what to do. She
had to do something
to save her babies.

She had a bright idea. She decided to act injured.

She started walking with one wing dragging on
the ground.

When the fox saw her, he was overjoyed. ‘It looks

like she’s hurt and can’t fly!’ he thought to himself.
‘I’m sure I’ll be able to catch the mother duck and
eat her!’ He ran towards her.

When the mother duck saw the fox running to

attack her, she stopped dragging and started run-
ning. She turned to look at her ducklings and saw
that they had jumped into the lake. She was re-
lieved.

Just when the fox was about to catch her, the

mother duck spread her wings and flew into the air.
She landed in the middle of the lake. Her ducklings
swam towards her and they were together again.

The fox looked at the mother duck and her duck-

lings in amazement. He’d been tricked by the moth-
er duck. He could not reach them now as they were
in the middle of the lake.

Moral of the story- Intelligence always wins over

might.
