HOW TO CALCULATE EARTH VOLUME BY USING AUTOCAD CIVIL 3D 2008

STEPS:

1. Open the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008 software.


2. To open your layout, go to FileOpen…for example, choose this file:
AUTOCADCIVIL3DMANUAL\EW-S01.dwg
3. Click General then click Toolspace
4. Go to Settings at Toolspace
5. Right click on EW-S01 and choose Edit Drawing Settings..
6. Under Drawing Settings-EW-S01
-Choose Ambient Settings;
-change all units (feet, square feet,inch and cubic yard) to
meter, square meter and cubic meter.
-Choose Units and Zone;
-change Drawing units:
-from feet to meters
-Finally click Apply and OK.
7. Go to Prospector at Toolspace.
8. Check on the original survey data received;
-make sure it have X,Y and Z values. To check those values, close all
layer accept OGL layer,
-right click on one of the OGL points and click Properties..
-go to DesignGeometrycheck at Position X,Y and Z.
-if there is no Z value, follow STEP 9. If there is Z value, carry on with STEP
10.
9. Create Z value for the OGL data and OGL surface;
-type Appload at command.
-Load/Unload Applications window will appear;
-click on txt2xyz.VLX and click Load then click Close.
-type txt2xyz at command and press Enter;
-type Entity and press Enter,
-select all OGL points and press Enter,
-press Enter,
-save data at your project folder,
-hit enter on the AutoCAD message.
-right click on Surfaces at Prospector;
-click Create Surface,
-Create Surface window will appear;
-choose Type:TIN Surface,
-named your surface as OGL at the Information,
-click OK when done.
-right click on Points at Prospector;
-choose Create..
-under Create Points window click on Import Points icon,
-Import Points window will appear,
-change Format to PENZ(comma delimited),
-at Source File, click on Source File icon and browse for txt2xyz.txt from
your project file then click Open,
-finally click OK
-close Create Points window.
-click ‘+’ at Surfaces under the Prospector;

-click ‘+’ at OGL;
-click ‘+’ at Definition,
-right click on Points Groups,
-click Add..
-select All Points and click Apply and OK
-click ‘-‘ at Definition,
-click ‘-‘ at OGL
-right click on OGL and select Edit Surface Style..
-Surface Style window will appear,
-select Display,
-at View Direction:2D,
-light on the Elevations layer and light off the others.
-at View Direction:3D,
-light on the Elevations layer and light off the others.
-click Apply and OK.
-right click on OGL and select Surface Properties..
-select Analysis,
-under RangesNumber :8 and click Run Analysis icon,
-click Apply and OK.
-under Layer Properties Manager,
-light on Layer 0 and you will see the colour surface on your land area.
-click ‘+’ at Surfaces under the Prospector;
-right click on OGL at Prospector and choose Edit Surface Style..
-choose Analysis,
-click on ‘+’ at Elevations
-change Display Type from 2D Solid to 3D Faces
-click Apply and OK
-colour surface will automatically change from 2D Solid to 3D Faces,
-to view 3D model,
-click on 3D Faces line, right click and choose Object Viewer..
-you will see the surface of your land in 3D model,
-rotate the 3D model by holding the left click and move around,
-click on cross to close view.
10. Create Z value for the OGL data and OGL surface;
-right click on Surfaces at Prospector;
-click Create Surface,
-Create Surface window will appear;
-choose Type:TIN Surface,
-named your surface as OGL at the Information,
-click OK when done.
-click ‘+’ at Surfaces under the Prospector;
-click ‘+’ at OGL;
-click ‘+’ at Definition,
-right click on Drawing Objects,
-click Add..
-Add Points From Drawing Objects,
-under Object Type: select Points
-under Description: type OGL
-then select all OGL points on layout and hit Enter.
-right click on OGL and select Edit Surface Style..
-Surface Style window will appear,

-select Display,
-at View Direction:2D,
-light on the Elevations layer and light off the others.
-at View Direction:3D,
-light on the Elevations layer and light off the others.
-click Apply and OK.
-right click on OGL and select Surface Properties..
-select Analysis,
-under RangesNumber :8 and click Run Analysis icon,
-click Apply and OK.
-under Layer Properties Manager,
-light on Layer 0 and you will see the colour surface on your land area.
-click ‘+’ at Surfaces under the Prospector;
-right click on OGL at Prospector and choose Edit Surface Style..
-choose Analysis,
-click on ‘+’ at Elevations
-change Display Type from 2D Solid to 3D Faces
-click Apply and OK
-colour surface will automatically change from 2D Solid to 3D Faces,
-to view 3D model,
-click on 3D Faces line, right click and choose Object Viewer..
-you will see the surface of your land in 3D model,
-rotate the 3D model by holding the left click and move around,
-click on cross to close view.

11. Create new layer named Proposed Platform

12. By using Proposed Platform layer, draw polyline surround the proposed
development.

13. Click on drawn polyline,


-convert 2D polyline to 3D polyline by click on Grading, choose Polyline
Utilities and click on Convert 2D to 3D Polyline,
-click on polyline and right click then choose Properties..
-under Geometry, click on Vertex, and key in proposed platform level
at Vertex Z,
-key in proposed platform level for each Vertex number,
-click right arrow at Vertex to move from one point to the other
point.

14. Click on all Proposed Platform polyline and type Explode then hit Enter.

15.Create Proposed Platform surface;


-right click on Surfaces at Prospector;
-click Create Surface,
-Create Surface window will appear;
-choose Type:TIN Surface,
-named your surface as PROPOSED PLATFORM at the
Information,
-click OK when done.
-click ‘+’ at Surfaces under the Prospector;

-click ‘+’ at PROPOSED PLATFORM;
-click ‘+’ at Definition,
-right click on Drawing Objects,
-click Add..
-Add Points From Drawing Objects window will appear,
-under Object Type: select Lines
-under Description: type PROPOSED PLATFORM
-then select all Proposed Platform polyline (that was created and exploded
before) on layout and hit Enter.
-close the Panorama window.
- Create new layer named Site Boundary.
- By using Site Boundary layer, draw polyline surround the proposed
development. Offset the site boundary polyline 5meter outside the proposed
development.
- right click on Boundaries under the Definition. Click Add..
-Add Boundaries window will appear, type Site Boundary under Name:, then
click OK. Click on Site Boundary polyline.
-click ‘-‘ at Definition,
-click ‘-‘ at PROPOSED PLATFORM
16.To calculate Cut and Fill volume.
-Create Volume surface;
-right click on Surfaces at Prospector;
-click Create Surface,
-Create Surface window will appear;
-choose Type:TIN Volume Surface,
-named your surface as VOLUME at the Information,
-click on <Base Surface>, and click on … symbol. Choose OGL and click OK.
-click on <Comparison Surface>, and click on … symbol. Choose PROPOSED
PLATFORM and click OK.
-right click on VOLUME and select Edit Surface Style..
-Surface Style window will appear,
-select Display,
-at View Direction:2D,
-light on the Elevations layer and light off
the others.
-at View Direction:3D,
-light on the Elevations layer and light off
the others.
-click Apply and OK.
-right click on VOLUME and select Surface Properties..
-select Analysis,
-under RangesNumber :2 and click Run Analysis icon,
-under Range Details, at ID no 1 – maintain the value at Minimum Elevation
but change the Maximum Elevation to 0. Maintain the Blue colour under the
Scheme. (Blue colour mean CUT area)
-under Range Details, at ID no 2 –change the Minimum Elevation to 0 but
maintain the value at Maximum Elevation. Change the colour to Red under
the Scheme. (Red colour mean FILL area)
-click Apply and OK.
-under Layer Properties Manager,

-light on Layer 0 and others. You will see the Cut and Fill colour surface on
your land area.
-view your cut and fill volume by right click on VOLUME and select Surface
Properties..
-go to Statistic and click ‘+’ at Volume. You will see the result of Cut Volume,
Fill Volume and Net Volume.
-to view 3D model,
-click on 3D Faces line, right click and choose Object Viewer..
-you will see the surface of your land in 3D model,
-rotate the 3D model by holding the left click and move around,
-click on cross to close view.
