SECTION 1
You are advised to spend about half an hour on this section, which contains ONE question.

1 A fire has occurred at a workplace and a worker has been badly injured.

(a) Outline the procedure for investigating the accident. (10)

(b) Outline why the investigation report needs to be submitted to senior


management. (5)

(c) In addition to senior managers, identify who else may need to know the
outcome of the investigation. (5)

SECTION 2
You are advised to spend about one and a half hours on this section, which contains TEN questions.

2 Identify possible costs to an organisation resulting from inadequate health and


safety standards. (8)

3 (a) Identify why a worker may require health and safety training. (4)

(b) Outline how training can have a positive influence on the health and
safety performance of workers. (4)

4 Outline how national governments can contribute towards good standards of
health and safety within their territories. (8)

5 Due to its limitations personal protective equipment (PPE) should only be


considered after other control measures.

Outline the limitations of using PPE. (8)

6 (a) Outline the purpose of the ‘statement of intent’ section of a health and
safety policy. (2)

(b) Identify circumstances that would require a health and safety policy to be
reviewed. (6)

7 (a) Outline the meaning of the term ‘health and safety culture’. (2)

(b) Identify indicators that an organisation’s health and safety culture may be
poor or ineffective. (4)

(c) Outline how workers may influence each other with regard to an
organisation’s health and safety culture. (2)

8 Outline what an organisation may need to consider when setting health and
safety objectives. (8)

9 A serious accident has occurred. During the investigation it is found that an


inspection of the workplace had taken place before the accident.

Outline possible reasons why the inspection failed to identify a problem. (8)

10 (a) Identify FOUR types of emergency that would require an organisation to


have an emergency procedure. (4)

(b) Outline why visitors to a workplace should be informed of an


organisation’s emergency procedures. (4)

11 An organisation is to introduce a new manufacturing process. It is important that


all significant risks are assessed and properly managed.

(a) Give the meaning of the term ‘risk’ AND give a workplace example of a
risk. (2)

(b) Outline what the organisation needs to consider when deciding who
should carry out risk assessments. (6)
