DEFINITION OF EMERGENCY
ROUTE
-Emergency route means the route that employees are directed to
follow in the event they are required to evacuate the workplace or
seek a designated refuge area.

WHY EMERGENCY ROUTE IS

IMPORTANT?
-A workplace must have at least two exit routes to permit prompt
evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an
emergency. More than two exits are required, if the number of
employees, size of the building, or arrangement of the workplace will
not allow employees to evacuate safely.

THERE ARE THREE PART OF EXIT

ROUTE
• Exit access – portion of an exit route that leads to an exit.

• Exit – portion of an exit route that is generally separated from other areas to
provide a protected way of travel to the exit discharge.

• Exit discharge – part of the exit route that leads directly outside or to a
street, walkway, refuge area, public way, or open space with access to the
outside.

FIRE PREVENTION
-One of the most important components of hostel fire
safety management is fire prevention. This entails
locating and removing any potential fire hazards from
the inside as well as the outside of the structure, as well
as establishing appropriate housekeeping procedures,
conducting routine inspections, and carefully following
safety regulations. It is advised that the following fire
safety precautions be implemented in the daily
operations of the establishment.

1.Trash and Waste

PAGE 5
It is common for combustible waste materials, like wrappings
and waste paper, to serve as the fuel for fires, so plans for the
regular collection and removal of waste should be made.
Garbage and waste should be stored in appropriate containers
at a designated location, away from sources of ignition, until
they are removed. It is important to emphasize to both staff
and visitors how important it is to maintain all areas of the
property neat and orderly. Waste and debris shouldn't be
permitted to build up in stairwells or escape routes.

2.SMOKING
One of the most frequent causes of unintentional fires is
smoking and the negligent disposal of materials used by
smokers. If smoking is allowed, it should only be done in
designated areas. There should be "No Smoking" signs posted
in locations where smoking is prohibited. It should be against
the law to smoke in kitchen areas, laundromats, stores, dorm
rooms, and bedrooms. Ashtrays of the right kind ought to be
available in places where smoking is allowed.

3. Electrical Installations and Appliances PAGE 6

-Inspection and testing of the electrical installation and

appliances in hostels is dealt with in Chapter 6 of this Guide.
Staff should be trained to use electrical equipment correctly
and safely, and to report defective electrical equipment.
Defective equipment should not be used; repairs as
appropriate should only be carried out by competent persons.
Equipment should be switched off when not in use. Occupants
should be advised as to the correct use of electrical appliances
which may be provided in their bedrooms; care should be
taken with the use of such appliances such as electric
blankets, heaters, hair dryers etc
