RELIABILITY OF MFI-17 ENGINES

(Case Study for Revision of Cruise Power Setting)

1. Performance of MFI-17 ac engine frequently comes unider discussion by Avn
Dte / Comd. TBO interval for subj engine was also reduced for from 2000hrs to
1400hrs in strong recom by Avn Dte. AAES is imparting gr schooling of TPC as per
new trg methodology with special emphasis on MTF proforma. During the same,
MSK engine power settings (in prac vis-à-vis OEM recom settings) were also
deliberated with a possible link with engine performance / reliability.

Review of MFI-17 Cruise Power Setting

2. Max cruise power for MFI-17 engine is ltd to 75% HP as is estb by Flight
Manual MFI-17 and is power settings to achieve the same is given in Power vs
Altitude Chart. (extract from Flight Manual MFI-17 att as Anx A). Furthermore, OEM
recoms best power setting for max TBO life is ≤ 65% HP vide Lycoming Svc Instr
1094D (extract att at Anx B).
3. Cruise power settings as prac by avn pilots is 2500 propellor RPM with a
manifold pr of 25 inHg (Extract from MFI-17 Pilots Cx List att as Anx C) which
amounts to 79% - 83% HP at a test alt of 4000 ft.
4. Comparison of OEM recom settings (Anx A) vs adopted cruise power setting
(Anx C) at a test alt of 4000ft is tabulated below: -‘

5. Cruise power setting (2500 RPM – 25 MP) as prac by avn pilots is violating
the max cruise HP limit defined by OEM (AMF / Lycoming).
6. Recom. In lt of above stated, it is recom that AMF Kamra be apch for
comments on correct cruise power setting for MFI-17 ac.
