STRAIN TENSOR

Session 18: Examples for Strain Tensor

2022
Learning Objectives
• Solve problems related to strain tensor.
Example 3.1
Consider the displacement field
𝒖= 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟐 𝒊 + 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 𝒋 + 𝟐𝒙𝟑 + 𝟒𝒛 𝒌 𝟏𝟎−𝟒 𝒎
What are the rectangular strain components at the point
𝑷 𝟏, 𝟐, 𝟑 ?
a) Use only linear terms.
b) Use nonlinear terms also.

2 × 10−4 + 24.5 × 10−8 16 × 10−4 + 136 × 10−8

4 × 10−4 + 8 × 10−8 7 × 10−4 + 56 × 10−8

0 6 × 10−4 + 24 × 10−8
Example 3.2
A square glass block in the side of a skyscraper, shown in
Figure, is loaded so that the block is in a state of plane strain
(𝜺𝒛 = 𝜺𝒛𝒙 = 𝜺𝒛𝒚 = 𝟎).
a) Determine the displacements for the block for the
deformations shown and the strain components for the (𝒙,
𝒚) coordinate axes.
b) Determine the strain components for the (𝑿, 𝒀) axes.

Example 3.3
A 𝟐 𝒎 by 𝟏. 𝟓 𝒎 by 𝟏 𝒎 parallelepiped is deformed by
movement of corner point 𝑨 to ′ 𝟏. 𝟗𝟗𝟖𝟓, 𝟏. 𝟒𝟗𝟖𝟖, 𝟏. 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟗 , as
shown by the dashed lines in Figure. Calculate the following
quantities at point 𝑨:
a) the strain components;
b) the normal strain in the direction of line 𝑨𝑩; and
c) the shearing strain for perpendicular lines 𝑨𝑩 and 𝑨𝑪.

Example 3.4
The displacement field and strain distribution in a member
have the form
𝒖 = 𝒂𝟎 𝒙𝟐 𝒚𝟐 + 𝒂𝟏 𝒙𝒚𝟐 + 𝒂𝟐 𝒙𝟐 𝒚

𝒗 = 𝒃𝟎 𝒙𝟐 𝒚 + 𝒃𝟏 𝒙𝒚𝟐
𝜸𝒙𝒚 = 𝒄𝟎 𝒙𝟐 𝒚 + 𝒄𝟏 𝒙𝒚 + 𝒄𝟐 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒄𝟑 𝒚𝟐

What relationships connecting the constants 𝒄′𝐬 with 𝒂′𝐬 and

𝒃′𝐬 make the foregoing expressions possible?
𝑐0 = 2𝑎0 𝑐1 = 2 𝑎1 + 𝑏0

𝑐2 = 𝑎2 𝑐3 = 𝑏1
Example 3.5
Given the following system of strains
𝜺𝒙 = 𝟓 + 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝒙𝟒 + 𝒚𝟒 , 𝜺𝒛 = 𝟎
𝜺𝒚 = 𝟔 + 𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒚𝟐 + 𝒙𝟒 + 𝒚𝟒 , 𝜸𝒚𝒛 = 𝟎
𝜸𝒙𝒚 = 𝟏𝟎 + 𝟒𝒙𝒚 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟐 , 𝜸𝒛𝒙 = 𝟎

Determine whether the above strain field is possible. If it is

possible, determine the displacement components in terms of 𝒙
and 𝒚, assuming that 𝒖 = 𝒗 = 𝟎 and 𝜸𝒙𝒚 = 𝟎 at the origin.

The following state of strain exists at a point 𝑷
𝟏 𝟎 𝟎
𝜺𝒊𝒋 =𝒑 𝟎 𝟎 −𝟒

Determine the principal strains and the directions of the
principal strains if 𝒑 = 𝟏𝟎−𝟒 .
