Feeders
Scope: [2.15.1.1](p.91)
Article 2.15(p.91) covers the installation and
minimum conductor sizing requirement for feeders,
Figure 1.

Feeder – All circuit conductors between the

source the service equipment or source of a separately
derived system and the final branch circuit overcurrent
device.

Feeders
Minimum Rating and Size: [2.15.1.2] (p.91)

Feeders must have an ampacity NOT less than the

load calculated in Article:
(1) 2.20.2(p.99), branch circuit load calculation;
(2) 2.30.3(p.103), feeder and service load
calculations; and
(3) 2.20.4(p.112), optional feeder and service load
calculations.
Feeders

(a) Continuous Load Computation: [2.15.1.2(a)(1)] (p.91)

Feeder conductor for continuous loads are sized NO

less than
(i) 125 per cent of the continuous load plus
(ii) 100 per cent of the non-continuous loads,
based on the ampacities as listed on Table 3.10.1.16
(p.350), before any ampacity derating factors, for terminal
ratings.
Feeders
In addition, the conductor must have an ampacity
after derating of NOT less than 100% of the total load.

Note: Be sure that the conductor is protected at its derated

ampacity according to 2.40.1.4(b)(p.165).

2.40.1.4(b)(p.165). Devices Rated 800 Amperes or Less. The next higher

standard overcurrent protective device (above the ampacity of the
conductors being protected) shall be permitted to be used, provided all
the following conditions are met:
(1) The conductors being protected are not part of a multioutlet
branch circuit supplying receptacles for cord-and plug-connected
portable loads.
Feeders
(2) The ampacity of the conductors does not correspond with
the standard ampere rating of a fuse or a circuit breaker without
overload trip adjustment above its rating .

(3) The next higher standard rating selected does not exceed
800 amperes.
Feeders

Question: What size of conductor and

protection device is required for a feeder that
supplies a 184 – ampere continuous load where
the raceway contains four current–carrying
conductors, Figure 2?
Feeders

Given

184 A

Figure 2. Feeder Conductors for Continuous Loads Sized at 125%

Feeders
Solution:

Step 1: Continuous load

I = 184A x 1.25
= 230A (total load)

Step 2: 125 mm2 (or 250 kcmil) THHN copper conductor

is rated 255A at 75°C.
Feeders

Notes:
(1) 125 mm2 (or 250 kcmil) THHN has an ampacity
after derating of 265 A x 0.80 (Column 4, Table
3.10.1.6, p.350) = 212 A (less than 230A)

(2) 125 mm2 (or 250 kcmil) rated 212A CANNOT

protected by a 250A overcurrent protection device
because the next size up rule does not apply
2.40.1.3(b)(p.165).
Feeders
Step 3: A 150 mm2 (or 300 kcmil) THHN copper conductor
rated 236A (= 295A x 0.80), after derating would
be protected by the 250A overcurrent protection
device.

Note: The ampacity of the conductor after derating

is 236A > 230A @ 100% of the total load

The identification of the high-leg conductor
shall be by using orange phase tape, painting the

(b) Track Lighting:
The plans show that track lighting is mounted on the
ceiling of the living room on the wall opposite the fireplace.
Track lighting provides :
(a) accent lighting for a fireplace,
(b) a painting on the wall,
(c) some item (sculpture or collection) that the
homeowner wishes to focus attention on, or
(d) it may used to light work areas such as counters,
game tables in such areas as the kitchen nook.

individual ceiling fixtures that occupy a very
definite spaces, track lighting offers flexibility
because the actual lampholders can be moved

has a 90°C rating)
Note

1. Residential panelboards are generally marked 75°C

2. Circuit breakers and switches are generally marked

“75°C only “ or “60°C/75°C”.
3. Most branch circuits rated 15A and 20A have
receptacles and snap switches that have a maximum
temperature rating of 60°C.
Therefore, no matter what the temperature rating
of the panelboard or conductors might be (i.e. 90°C for
THHN) , the conductor ampacity must be determined
on the 60°C column of Table 3.10.1.16(p.350) because
the “weakest link” of the chain are the receptacles and
snap switches.
Note

4. Snap switches and circuit breaker 15A and 20A

receptacles are rated for 60°C
