Assignment 1
Answer the following questions.
1. What is the definition of leisure, recreation, and sports? What is the contrast between them?
Before we can bring out the contrast between any given terms, first, we have to define
and understand the definition of each one of them. Leisure has often been defined as a quality
of experience or as free time. Free time is time spent away from business, work, job hunting,
domestic chores, and education, as well as necessary activities such as eating and sleeping.
Recreation, on the other hand, refers to a pastime, diversion, exercise, or other resource
affording relaxation and enjoyment. Lastly, sports is a human activity involving physical exertion
and skill as the primary focus of the activity, with elements of competition or social participation
where rules and patterns of behavior governing the activity exist formally. There’s a thin line
between the three, but what I have understood is that, leisure is the free time one has, and
recreation is when an individual is always involved in the fun in that free time. Recreation is a
physical activity designed to bring enjoyment to the user, while sport usually involves
competition, and is something that makes anyone want to be good at it.
2. What are the similarities and differences between leisure and recreation?
Leisure is considered broader than recreation, the activities that take place during
leisure, and the interrelationships between the two terms are then considered. Leisure is defined
as the freedom to do what you want when you want. Recreation, on the other hand, is planned
and structured. It usually involves physical activity and is often used to improve fitness or health.
Some activities can be a leisure activity and recreational activity. What sets the same activity
apart in the two categories is the intent. Walking, for example, is an activity that can be both a
leisure activity and a recreational activity. Which type of activity category the walking falls into
depends on how you choose to walk. If you are walking for leisure, you may take a stroll with no
specific destination. If you are walking for recreation, you may have a particular route and pace
you follow to get from point A to point B that gets your heart rate up as your focus is on getting
some exercise.
3. What is recreation, and why is it important?
Recreation refers to all those activities that people choose to do to refresh their bodies
and minds and make their leisure time more interesting and enjoyable. Recreation brings a lot of
benefits to the people. Other benefits of recreation include reduction of stress, improvement of
happiness, build character, improve interaction with diverse sets of people, and contribute to
time management.
4. What is the significance of recreation to your everyday living?
Life in this century is extremely hectic, tiring and stressful for a good number of people. It
could empty you of physical and mental strength. People who continue to work like a machine
each and every day with no recreational activities are likely to be stressed and drained out in no
time and this will stop them from achieving their plans and goals. However, engaging in
recreational activities like a walk, jog, aerobics, a favorite sport, dance or regular workouts on a
daily basis would help you stay physically strong, fit and healthy. It helps you to attain a proper
balance in your life, and would bring about a level of contentment in your life, making you feel
totally free of unwanted worries and stress. This, in turn, would help a person to perform better
and be successful. Thus the overall quality of your life is improved.
5. What are the best recreational activities for you, and why?
Bicycling has been a long-time hobby of mine, and it's my favorite recreational activity as
it produces both long and short-term benefits. It's an enjoyable activity which involves being
outdoors and away from the less beneficial pursuits such as television, computer and the
refrigerator. It's a vigorous interest that not just the young and healthy can participate but kids
and the elderly as well. My father was the one who taught me how to ride, and he's really
passionate about cycling as well. I usually ride on the challenging mountains of Talisay. It is
absolutely satisfying as much as it is tiring. I feel much healthier ever since I've started cycling,
and the mountain views and refreshing air makes the trip even more worthwhile.
