Experiment #6
Aim: To determine the heat of solution for MgSO₄, K2SO4, KNO₃ and NH₄NO₃ by measuring the
temperature change during its dissolution.

Record your masses and volumes and temperatures for the salts. USE A DIFFERENT MASS
AND VOLUME FOR EACH SALT. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure accurate
answers.

Calculations
➢ Mol of K2SO4 =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 2.50g / (32.07 + (39.10 × 2) + (16.00 × 4))g/mol
➢ = 0.0143mol
➢ Mol of KNO₃ =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 18.00g / (14.01 + 39.10 + (16.00 × 3))g/mol
➢ = 0.178mol
➢ Mol of KNO𖾔 =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 25.00g / (14.01 + (1.008 × 4) + 14.01 + (16.00 × 3))g/mol
➢ = 0.312mol
Conclusion: The heat of solution for MgSO₄, K2SO4, KNO₃ and NH₄NO₃ were calculated to be
-84.96kJ/mol, 26.70kJ/mol, 35.26kJ/mol and 26.43kJ/mol respectively.
