OPERATION MANUAL

‘ENKAY’ FLAKINESS & ELONGATION INDEX GAUGES

FLAKINESS INDEX GAUGE :

FLAKINESS INDEX GAUGE is designed for determining the FLAKINESS

(THICKNESS) of coarse aggregates.

FLAKINESS INDEX of an aggregate is the percentage by weight of

particles in it whose least dimensions (Thickness) is less than three fifths of
their mean dimension. The apparatus is meant for aggregates over 6.3 mm in
size upto 63 mm.

APPARATUS

The apparatus consists of a metal gauge having elongated slots mounted

over a rigid steel round bar in rectangular shape. The sizes of aggregates to
be tested are marked on the metal gauge thus :

63 to 50 mm; 50 to 40 mm; 40 to 25 mm; 25 to 20 mm; 20 – 16 mm; 16 –

12.5 mm; 12.5 to 10 mm; 10 mm to .3 mm and 31.5 mm to 25 mm.

PROCEDURE
Take a bulk of aggregates of assorted sizes and shapes. Weigh the bulk of
aggregates in a weighing machine with an accuracy of 0.1% of the total
weight of the bulk of aggregates. Using a set of sieves of mesh sizes 63 mm;
50 mm; 40 mm; 31.5 mm; 25mm; 20 mm; 16 mm; 12.5 mm 10 mm; and 6.3
mm sieve the bulk of aggregates staring from 63 mm sieve downwards.
Ensuring that the bulk of aggregates have been thoroughly sieved and
segregated, retain the aggregates in the sieves itself and discard the balance
that has passed through 6.3 mm sieves.

Making use of the metal gauge (Flakiness Index Gauge) pass every
aggregate individually through the slots in the metal gauge.
Take into account only those aggregates that pass through freely through the
slots both lengthwise and widthwise. Aggregates that do not pass width wise
should be discarded and similarly aggregates that do not pass length wise
should also be not taken into account.

After passing each and every aggregate through various slots depending
upon the size of aggregates, weigh the samples in a balance to an accuracy
of 0.1% of the weight of the aggregates.

CALCULATIONS: RESULTS

The number of pieces passing the appropriate gauge in each fraction shall be
calculated as a percentage of the total number of pieces in each sieve
fraction (X). The mass of the total number of pieces in each sieve fraction
shall then be calculated as a percentage of the total mass of the whole
sample (Y). The weighed percentage of the mass of pieces passing the
appropriate gauge in each sieve fraction shall then be calculated by
multiplying X by Y.

The Flakiness Index shall be expressed as the sum of weighed percentages

of the material passing the appropriate gauge in each fraction.

ELONGATION INDEX GAUGE

ELONGATION INDEX is designed for determining the elongation (Length)

of coarse aggregates.

ELONGATION INDEX of an aggregate is the percentage by weight of

particles whose greatest dimension (Length) is greater than one and four-
fifths times their mean dimension. The apparatus is meant for aggregates
obver 6.3 mm in size up to 50 mm.

APPARATUS

The apparatus consists of a gauge mounted over a steel plate on a wooden

stand. The gauge pins are spaced at various intervals over the steel plate
indicating the size of aggregate to be tested.

The gauge pins are placed an interval ,of, for aggregates with the marking 50
– 40; 40 – 25; 25 – 20; 20 – 16; 16 – 12.5; 12.5 – 10 and 10 – 6.3 mm. These
markings indicate the length of aggregates to be passed through.

PROCEDURE

Follow the same procedure of sieving the bulk of aggregates as done for
Flakiness Index Gauge.

Then individually pass the aggregates based on its size between the two
pins. The aggregates should pass through freely without being forced in.

Weigh the samples that have passed through the pins.

CALCULATIONS AND RESULTS

The Elongation Inded is the total writht of the material retyained on the
various length gauges, expressed as percentage of the total wreight of the
sample gauged.

PRECAUTIONS :

 The Flakiness Index Gauge and Elongation Index Gauges are

precision engineered and forcing the aggregates between the slots/pins
may damage their dimensions. Ensure that each aggregate passes
through the respective slot/pin freely.

 Keep the gauges free from dirt, scratches.

 Clean the gauges before and after use.

 Avoid using any sharp implement for cleaning the gauges.
