USES OF MEASURING

MATERIALS IN IGNITION
SYSTEM
OBJECTIVES:
• IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT MEASURING INSTRUMENTS IN
IGNITION SYSTEM
• SLECT APPROPRIATE MEASURING INSTRUMENT
ACCORDING TO TASK REQUIREMENT
• APPRECIATE THE IMPORTANCE OF APPROPRIATE USES OF
MEASURING INSTRUMENT THROUGH CONCEPT MAPPING.
MEASURING INSTRUMENTS
The device that is used for measurement of certain physical
quantity is called as measuring instrument is are used frequently
in our day to day life for measurement of various qualities like
length, weight, temperature, pressure, current and voltage.
A measuring instrument must be always kept clean.
Dirty, bent, and creased measuring instrument like
measuring tape, steel rule, and caliper will give
inaccurate reading if the gradation lines are not
readable.

TORQUE WRENCH
Is a special service tool for measuring the twisting force applied when tightening bolts and
nuts.
is a tool used to apply a specific torqueto a fastener such as a nut or bolt. It is usually in the
form of a socket wrench with special internal mechanisms. It was invented by Conrad Bahr
in 1918 while working for the New York City Water Department.
Torque Wrench Use and Care Tips
Tighten fasteners in two steps—first to half
torque and then to final torque.
Clean dirty or rusted threads before
tightening, but don’t lubricate them unless
instructed to by the equipment
manufacturer.
Always dial the wrench back to zero (never
below zero) when you’re done with it.
Never use your torque wrench as
a breaker bar—that’ll damage the torque
mechanism.
Carry it with kid gloves—a single fall can
knock the accuracy off by as much as 30
percent. If you do drop it, get it recalibrated
(calibration firms listed below) before using it
again.
STEEL RULE
• Is a measuring strip of steel available in various lengths in metric and English
system. It is available in 12, 24,36,and 48 inches size. It is used in linear
measurement of short length or height.
• When used correctly, a good steel rule is a surprisingly accurate measuring
device.
• Steel rules can be flexible or nonflexible, thin or wide. The thinner the rule, the
more accurately it measures, because the division marks are closer to the work.
CALIPER
• Is a tool used in measuring the diameter of a circular work. The inside
caliper is used in measuring inside diameter whereas the outside
caliper is used in measuring outside diameter of an object. The caliper
is adjustable.
• The Vernier caliper is a good example that is capable to measure both
the inside and outside diameter of an object with accuracy. It can also
measure the thickness and thinness in thousandths of an inch.
METAL TAPE MEASURE
• Is a push and pull, long strip of thin sheet of metal with corresponding increments in
millimeter and inches graduation. It is used for measuring stock and can be bought in
different sizes of length.
• Generally speaking, the term “tape measure” refers to a roll-up, self-retracting style tape
measure that’s designed for carpentry. The actual tape potion of the measure, called the
‘ribbon,’ is usually constructed from a stiff metallic material that can stiffen when needed
but can also roll up for simple use and storage. However, the term covers all types of
tape measures – even tailor’s tape.
FEELER GAUGE
• Is a thin strip of metal with different thickness used to measure or set gap
and clearance between parts of mechanism.
• They consist of a number of small lengths of steel of different thicknesses
with measurements marked on each piece.
• A feeler gauge can be used to gauge a multitude of narrow slots. Multiple
tests are usually required to confirm the exact size of a gap.
