“You are what you eat”: Simply means whatever you eat contributes to your health.

Just like for

example if you eat junk foods or eat fast food every day then you’ll be at a higher chance/risk to
get sick or have a disease. But when you eat foods such as vegetables and fruits then higher
chance to live a healthy life.

“molecularBiomolecules - these are living things that are composed of large complex molecules;
these aren’t just building blocks, these are the molecules necessary for every living thing on
Earth to survive.
● The essential source of energy
● Means of storing that energy (energy storage)

Divided into 4 parts

CARBOHYDRATES - PROTEINS - LIPIDS - NUCLEIC ACID

● These larger molecules are constructed from smaller molecules referred to as

subunits: CARBON (C) - HYDROGEN (H)- OXYGEN (O) - NITROGEN (N)
● The subunits tend to repeat in exact patterns giving these molecules unique
properties

1) CARBOHYDRATES”sugars”: C-H-O w/ a ratio of 2H atoms to 1O atoms

➢ The primary energy source of our body
➢ Building block/monomer: MONOSACCHARIDES
➢ MONOSACCHARIDES “simple sugars”:
glucose (Blood Sugar), fructose (fruit sugar), and galactose (found in milk with
glucose)
➢ DISACCHARIDES “doubler sugars composed of 2 Monosaccharides”:
Maltose (Malt Sugar - beer “glucose + glucose”), lactose (Milk Sugar - “glucose +
galactose”), and sucrose (table sugar - “glucose + fructose”)

➢ POLYSACCHARIDES “complex sugars-more than 2 sugars”:

Starch (composed of long straight chains of glucose and stores carbohydrates in
plants - Potatoes, pasta, rice), Glycogen (stores carbohydrates in animals, but is
branched). Cellulose (these are the cell wall of plants, which is made of a sheet
of interconnected glucose molecules), chitin (forms the exoskeleton of certain
insects and crustaceans)

2) PROTEINS: C-H-O-N
➢ Bodybuilding molecules that help us grow; transport molecules in and out of the cell;
control the speed of chemical reactions; Enzymes - are used for growth and repair; make
up the structure of living things - hair, nails, skin, bones
➢ AMINO ACID - building block
➢ EGG-albumin,HEMOGLOBIN
