HM IC 101 – Speech and Oral Communication

Recording the drills was a struggle because of the background noises around me. Opening the
website went smoothly for me, but others had trouble due to the site crashing. I enjoyed recording the
drills; it felt like I was back in first grade, repeating after my teacher. I also found it a bit challenging to
understand the speaker due to the accent, but I was able to improve after I looked up the pronunciation
of certain words.
The first time I listened to my recorded drill, I was shocked at how different it sounded from what
I had imagined. However, as I continued practicing and recording more drills, I noticed a gradual
improvement in my pronunciation. The symbol system of recording played a crucial role in this
transformation.
A symbol system is essential in speech and oral communication because it allows individuals to
objectively analyze their performance. When we speak, we often have a mental image of how we sound
or appear to others. However, this perception can be distorted due to our own biases or lack of self-
awareness.
By using a symbol system like recording, we are able to capture our speeches in an objective
manner. This allows us to listen back and identify areas where we need improvement - whether it be
clarity of speech, volume control, or body language. Moreover, the symbol system also helps us track our
progress over time. By comparing earlier recordings with recent ones, we can see how far we have come
in terms of our oral communication skills.
Therefore, my experience with recording speech drills has taught me the importance of a symbol
system in improving pronunciation skills. It provides an objective perspective on our performance and
enables us to identify areas for growth. Through consistent practice and analysis using this symbol
system, anyone can become a confident speaker capable of captivating an audience.
