1) A generating unit, with x’d = 0.3 p.u, operates interconnected through a transmission line with reactance
of 0.4 p.u to a large system. The large system operates at rated voltage and power, being the angular
reference for the power system. The voltage magnitude at the generator terminals is 1.05 p.u and the
system delivers 0.8 p.u of active power. Neglect losses due to the joule effect in the armature and
transmission line. Determine:
a. The angle of the machine terminal voltage in relation to the system reference
b. The reactive power generated at the machine terminals.
c. The current magnitude and angle at the machine terminals.
d. The voltage magnitude, E, and  angle (in relation to the infinite bus voltage phasor), of the
phasor internal voltage of the generator.
e. The internal angle, int (measured relative to the machine's terminal voltage phasor), of the
machine's internal voltage phasor.
f. The maximum active power that could be generated by the machine for the values of E, x’d,
XL and V given in the problem.

2) For the infinite bus machine system in exercise 1), determine:

a. The synchronizing torque, Ks.
b. The natural angular frequency, n.

3) By using Matlab/Octave/Simulink software, develop a block diagram model for time domain simulation
of the dynamic behavior of the infinite bus machine system to simulate the cases presented in exercises 1
and 2. Simulate for 10 seconds. Apply a 0.05 p.u step-type disturbance to the input mechanical power.
Plot the dynamic behavior graphs for the output variables, angular velocity r, and electrical power, Pe

4) A 4-pole, 60 Hz, 11 kV turbo generator is rated 75 MW and 0.86 power fator lagging. The machine rotor
has a moment of intertia of 9000 Kg-m2. Find the inertia constant in MJ/MVA.

5) A four pole synchronous generator rated 110 MVA 12.5 kV, 60 Hz has an inertia constant of 5.5 MJ/MVA
a. Determine the stored energy in the rotor at synchronous speed.
b. When the generator is supplying a load of 75 MW, the input is increased by 10 MW.
Determine the rotor acceleration, neglecting losses.

6) Power is supplied by a generator to a motor over a transmission line as shown in Figure 1. To the motor
bus a capacitor of 0.8 pu reactance per phase is connected through a switch. Determine the steady state
power limit with and without the capacitor in the circuit.

Figure 1- Exercise 6
7) A generator rated 75 MVA is delivering 0.8 pu power to a motor through a transmission line of reactance
j0.2 p.u (Figure 2). The terminal voltage of the generator is 1.0 p.u and that of the motor is also 1.0 p.u.
Determine the generator e.m.f behind transient reactance. Find also the maximum power that can be
transferred.

Figure 2 - Exercise 7
8) Determine the power angle characteristic for the system shown in Figure 3. The generator is operating at
a terminal voltage of 1.05 p.u and the infinite bus is at 1.0 p.u. voltage. The generator is supplying 0.8 p.u
power to the infinite bus.

Figure 3 - Exercise 8
9) Consider the system in 4) showin in Figure 4. A three phase fault occurs at point P as shown at the mid
point on line 2. Determine the power angle characteristic for the system with the fault persisting.

Figure 4 - Exercise 9
10) In 9) if the 3-phase fault is cleared on line 2 by operating the circuit breakers on both sides of the line,
determine the post fault power angle characteristic.

11) Determine the swing equation for the condition in 10) when 0.8 p.u power is delivered

12) Consider exercise 8) with the swing equation

Pe = 2.05sin
If the machine is operating at 28° and is subjected to a small transient disturbance, determine the
frequency of oscillation and also its period.

Given H = 5.5 MJ/MVA / Pe = 2.05sin28° = 0.9624167

13) The power angle characteristic for a synchronous generator supplying infinite bus is given by
Pe = 1.25sin

The H constant is 5 sec and initially it is delivering a load of 0.5 p.u. Determine the critical angle.

14) Consider the system shown in Figure 5

Figure 5 - Exercise 14
x’d = 0.25 p.u
|E| = 1.25 p.u and |V| = 1.0 p.u; X1 = X2 = 0.4 p.u

Initially the system is operating stable while delivering a load of 1.25 p.u. Determine the stability of
the system when one of the lines is switched off due to a fault.
15) Determine the maximum value of the rotor swing in the exercise 14)
