Introduction

The mammary glands are organs that undergo modifications during the

different stages of a woman's life, where the processes of proliferation, differentiation and

apoptosis are involved, under hormonal control. However, once these hormonal influences cease,

changes occur that lead to the involution of said organ. The following work will discuss

generalities about the different changes it undergoes during the key stages of development that

characterize it, from embryonic life to postmenopause.

conclusions

The breast has its origin in the mammary crest at seven weeks of age, to later

give rise to epithelial sprouts that form milk ducts and the alveoli of the gland. Therefore; It is a

composite tubuloalveolar gland, lined by contractile myoepithelial cells and luminal epithelial

cells, located anterior to the pectoral muscles.

The mammary glands are exclusive to mammals, with their specific function

of synthesizing, secreting and providing milk to the newborn. As a result of this function, it is

only during the pregnancy/lactation cycle that the gland reaches a state of mature development

thanks to the hormonal influences at the cellular level that cause drastic modifications in the

micro- and macroanatomy of the gland, transforming it into a milk-secreting organ.

By way of closure, the mammary gland is an organ that has the ability to

return to a state of rest upon cessation of lactation and then undergo the same cycle of expansion

and regression again in subsequent pregnancies throughout reproductive life.
