I. Future Simple (will-future)
– will & won’t (will not) –
WHEN DO WE USE THE WILL-FUTURE?
v Predictions, offers, promises, requests, suggestions:
E.g.: William will/shall be King at some point.
E.g.: Shall I get you some coffee? (very formal offer)
E.g.: Will you marry me? Yes, I will!

v Spontaneous decisions:
E.g.: I’ve just stained my shirt. I will wash it.
E.g.: As a starter, we will have the veggie spring rolls.
v When it is not certain whether something will
happen:
E.g.: If they come, I’ll buy a bottle of wine.
E.g.: It’s still unclear if it will rain or not.

v Opinions, hopes, fears expressed with “think”,


“expect”, “suppose”, “probably”, “maybe”, etc. :
E.g.: I think he’ll pass his test.
E.g.: She probably won’t come to the party.

‘Going to’ Future
- When do we use it? -
v Intentions:
E.g.: She is going to take her driving test in a
month.
E.g.: He’s not going to study this weekend.

v Plans that are not entirely fixed / not official


E.g.: I am going to meet my friends anytime
soon.
‘Going to’ Future
- When do we use it? -
v Predictions based on strong evidence
that something will definitely happen:
E.g.: She is going to have a baby.
E.g.: He cannot light a fire. He is going to burn
himself.
E.g.: Look at the sky: it’s going to rain!
