WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?
Hello my dear pupils! How are you? Are you now excited to gain new learnings
using our Self-Learning Module? Yes? Alright. We hope so! Let us now start!
To start with our lesson, let us first try to know the meaning of the following
words by understanding how the word is being used.
A. Jealous
Mark has a new baby brother. He thinks that his parents would no
longer notice him. He thinks they would no longer love him. Mark is
jealous of his baby brother.
Is it good to be jealous? Why? Why not?
B. Toss
Dona is proud of herself. She thinks she is the most beautiful girl in
school. She tosses her head most of the time.
Toss means lifting up your head with your chin up. As if you are
very proud of yourself.
C. Spilled
Marah was playing all around, so she spilled the glass of milk on the
table. The milk was spilled all over the table and the floor. What should
she do with the spilled milk?
So, is it now clear for you the meaning of jealous, toss and spilled? That
would be better because in our story later, you will be encountering these
words and it is good for you if you already know their meaning.
4
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
So, I want you to read with understanding because later on, we will be
going to answer some questions. Are you now ready? So here’s the story.
The Milkmaid
Mutya, the Milkmaid, was going to the market carrying a huge pail of pure
milk on her head. She hummed a happy tune while walking. As she went along,
she began thinking of what she would do with the money she would get for the
milk. “I’ll buy some chicken from Mang Tomas,” she said, “and they will lay eggs
each morning, then I will sell the eggs to the mayor’s wife. With the money that I
will get from the sale of the eggs, I’m sure I can buy myself a cute dress and a
hat; and when I go to the market, I would be a muse. Won’t all the young men
come up and speak to me! Ana will be that jealous, but I don’t care. I shall just
look at her and toss my head like this.” As she spoke, she tossed her head back,
the pail fell, and all the milk was spilled. She had to go home and tell her mother
what happened.
Just like what we have said a while ago, questions will be follow. Here’s the
question number 1.
Who is the character in the story?
a. Ana b. Mutya c. Mila d. Anita
Yes! You are right! The character in the story is Mutya. Very good! Next question.
Where is the character going?
a. in the market b. in the farm c. at the mall d. in the yard
Yes, you are correct! She planned to buy eggs after selling the milk, right? Ok next.
With all the money she will get from the sale of the eggs, Mutya wanted to
buy a cute dress and a hat. Why did she want to buy those things?
a. To impress her mother c. to make Ana jealous
b. To show them to mayor’s wife d. to sell them to the market
5
Absolutely! She wanted to buy those things just to make Ana jealous. Last
question.
Did you get it right? Very good! She stopped thinking about her plans when
she tossed her head and the milk spilled. That’s sad, right?
You know my dear pupil, one thing to easily understand the story you are
reading is enjoying it. Do not make reading a burden for you but a motivation to
learn something new from what you are reading.
Now, did you enjoy our story? Did you answer all the questions correctly? Is
it a big YES or a big NO?
If it is a big YES, that’s great! But if it is a big NO, there is no reason to be
upset because in this lesson, we will learn on how we are going to note significant
details in whatever selection that we will read.
Noting details is one of the comprehension skills every student like you
need to know. Noting the details in the story or selection means recognizing
and identifying the important characters, events, and ideas in what you have
read.
To master this skill, you must have to answer the questions about the
characters, people, or animal in the story. You will identify the main and secondary
characters in the story. You will answer questions about how a character feels,
what kind of a person he is or why he acts in a certain way in the story.
Questions #2,3,4. All of these are on the story characters. Identifying the
characters asks you to remember who said what. Sometimes the story gives the
exact words that describe a character but there times that the story does not
describe the characters directly.
Question 1 is on the setting of the story. The setting tells when or where the
story happened. The setting is usually at the beginning of the story. Always identify
the story setting. A setting tells when or where the story happened.
6
You will also answer questions about the events in the story. The questions
may be about the problem of the character and what he does to solve them.
You will identify the most exciting part of the story and tell how the story ends.
Story ending are sometimes directly stated. Clues are given on how the
story will end. Just like our story, it only stated there that “she had to go home and
tell her mother what happened”. That is the clue given by the story!
These are the questions you must learn to answer to master the skill of
noting details in what you have read.
Are you getting it? We hope so. That’s how easy to note details whenever
we are reading a story. Just by asking yourself the wh-questions like who, what
(for the characters), where and when (for the setting) and why and how (for the
events).
Now, I want you to know that it is not only stories where we can apply the
skill in noting details. Have you ever read poems? Letters? Recipes? or any
selection that gives you information? If you do, that’s great!
Our dear students, you may encounter or read different reading materials
not only your favorite stories. Just like what I have said before, there are a lot of
text types but the only thing that we will ask you to remember whatever you are
reading is to always understand them well. You may also jot down or take down
notes because doing so, will help you recall all those details that might be asked
during the comprehension questions.
Remember, you are not just reading to show others that you can recognize
words but you read because it can give you a lot of information that is very useful
not only for you as a student but as an individual.
So, are you now ready for our activities? Let’s do this!

ACTIVITY NUMBER 3
Have you ever wondered why sometimes when there is rain in the sky a
rainbow appears? And have you noticed when you see a rainbow it is also
sunny?
A rainbow is an arc of colors that appear in the sky. To each viewer, the
sun is on the other side of the rainbow. What each viewer is seeing is sunlight
shining through a raindrop in such a way where colors get divided by a
process called refraction or bending of light.
The colors of a rainbow are the main colors that together make up
what is called white light. Sunlight is white light, which are all the individual
colors of light mixed. The colors of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo, and violet.
A rainbow is not an object. It cannot be approached or touched. No
two people see the same rainbow. In fact, even each of our eyes see slightly
different rainbows! If someone appears to be standing under a rainbow you
can see, they will see a different rainbow at the same angle but further away.
Questions:
4. Which of the following statement does NOT tell about the rainbow?
a. A rainbow is not an object.
b. People can see the same rainbow in all places.
c. It can be touched.
d. It is a colorful arc.

Noting DetailS
Noting details is one of the skills pupils like you need to master. If you do, it
will be easy for you to understand any kind of selection that you are reading to.
Remember that the simplest way to note details is to look out for the answers for
the wh-questions. It could guide you in answering the questions that will be given
to you as comprehension check up.
Since our main objective is for you to note the significant details of various
text types, it is expected from you that at the end of the lesson, you will be able to
note details in a selection that you have read.
