Undamped Free Vibrations: Bifilar Pendulum

Therefore, time period t 2r/o,

Or (4n (L/b)' (1/3g)} h
Clearly, square of the time period is proportional to the height h.
Brief Procedure
For a particular height h, disturb the system by rotating the bar slightly, in the
horizontal plane and leaving, and initiate the vibrations.
Observe the time taken for a suficiently large number of oscillations N(say 20
oscillations).
Repeat for different values of h and complete the table.
Calculate the time period , for each value ofh.

Brief Procedure
Do not place the object on the plate.
Disturb the system by rotating the plate in the horizontal plane and leaving, and
initiate the vibrations.
Observe the time taken for a sufficicntly large numnber of oscillations N (say 20
oscillations). Find the time period of oscillations. Repeat 4 or 5 times and establish
the value of thetime period tnl
Thishelps calculation of the moment of inertia of the plate I, as,
I=(Tni b/2r)' (w, h) where, wisthe weight of the plate.
Place the objcct on theplate and observe the time period of oscillations Tp2 , in the
same way. The tn2 is given by, (Tn2) = 4n´ (h/b)I +)/(w + w)
where, I, and w, are the monment of inertia of the objcct and its weight,
respectively.
Therefore, I,+h=(tg b/2n)' (w, t wa/h
Since, I, is known alrcady, I, carí be calculated.
Standard values:r= 108mm, b=97.5mm, m0.39kg and m, = 0.89kg h lcm
