Coating Systems Guide for all Structures
Coating Systems Guide | Notes

1. The italicised numerals noted in “1st Coat”, “2nd Coat” etc. relate to microns of dry film thickness.

2. In some instances Carboguard 635 / 636 and 690 are frequently interchangeable epoxy coatings. Carboguard 635 for rapid cure / LTC.
Carboguard 690 for colour matching and Carboguard 636 for specific attributes.

3. In some instances Carbothane 134 HG, Carbothane 133 LH, E~Line 379 and E~Line 949 are frequently interchangeable polyurethane coat-
ings. For economy, use Carbothane 134 HG, for a satin finish use Carbothane 133 LH, for rapid dry use
E~Line 949, and for optimum UV, and anti-graffiti resistance, use E~Line 379.
Please contact the Altex Coatings Technical Services Department for advice regarding this.

4. In all maintenance repaint systems, prior to abrasive blasting, all surfaces will require Low (3-5,000 psi) to High (5-10,000 psi) Pressure Water
cleaning to decontaminate surfaces.

Note:
These systems are guidelines only. Systems will vary depending on many factors.
• For further assistance with specific industrial / chemical exposures contact the Altex Coatings Technical Services help line.
• The inclusion of stripe coats is recommended to ensure no premature failure occurs due to low builds on edges.
• Edges should be ground to a 2mm radius prior to abrasive blasting.

Important: - Ventilation
For (especially) systems prefixed CM, PW and IE, attention is drawn to the requirement to provide intrinsically safe and effective ventilation during the preparation, application and curing processes
when coating inside confined spaces.
Applicators are advised to thoroughly research the subject of ventilation for the specific project and to seek professional advice prior to the commencement of work.

Notes:
Note 1 Degrease in accordance with SP1. Using non-metallic media, sweep abrasiremove blistered / failed coatings to a bright, clean metal finish & achieve 20-40 micron profile. Prime within 2
hours of preparation.
Note 2 Degrease in accordance with SP1. Using non-metallic discs (60-80 grit), mechanically abrade to remove blistered / failed coat-ings to bright clean metal & achieve 20-40 micron profile.
Prime within 2 hours of preparation.
• When applying antifoulings over epoxy barrier coatings do not allow the epoxy to achieve advanced cure; optimum topcoat time is when the epoxy is solvent-free and firm, but not hard, to
moderate thumb pressure, typically 3 to 6 hours after application of the epoxy.
• In all maintenance repaint systems, prior to mechanical preparation, all surfaces will require Low (3-5,000 psi) to High (5-10,000 psi) Pressure Water cleaning to decontaminate surfaces.

• New Concrete – New concrete should be cured for 28 days @ 21°C and 50% R.H. or equivalent for maximum coating integrity / adhesion. If the cure state of concrete is unknown, suitability
of concrete integrity for coating may be ascertained by obtaining “pass” pull-off tests at ≥ 2 Mpa (300 psi) per ASTM D 4541. Curing membranes should not be used, or if used they must be
removed before applying coatings.
• Refer Altex Coatings “Guide to Surface Preparation & Repair of Concrete Structures” document for details on preparation, repair and sealing of concrete surfaces.
