The Significance of Mathematics in Science, Technology, and Everyday Life

By: Inas Rahma Alifia

The qualities, connections, and structures of abstract notions like numbers, forms,
quantities, and patterns are the subject of the systematic discipline of study known as
mathematics. It includes using deduction, logic, and the creation of rules to categorize and
forecast a variety of occurrences. Mathematics is the science of structure, order, and
connection that developed from calculating the sizes and dimensions of objects and defining
their forms. Logical analysis and numerical computation are essential to mathematics. It has
been a crucial complement to technology and the physical sciences since the 17th century, to
the point where it is now regarded as the fundamental language of science. Algebra, analysis,
arithmetic, combinatorics, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries, game theory, number
theory, numerical analysis, optimization, probability, set theory, statistics, topology, and
trigonometry are some of the main fields of mathematics.
The function that mathematics plays in advancing both science and technology is one
of the ways that it benefits humans. People who used mathematics as the basis for every modern
scientific incursion are to thank for the fact that the world is currently experiencing its fourth
industrial revolution. For instance, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper invented the first
cellphone in 1973. He gave it the moniker DynaTAC 8000X, and it was over a kilogram and
almost nine inches long. On April 3, 1973, he called his opponent at Bell Labs, initiating the
use of mobile phones (2022, November 15). He was an engineer who was well-versed in
science and mathematics; if he did not know mathematics, he would not have done what he
accomplished. Mathematics provides the foundation for modeling and understanding complex
natural phenomena, which has led to significant breakthroughs in fields such as physics,
engineering, medicine, and environmental science. It enables researchers to develop accurate
simulations, predict outcomes.
Lower math scores are associated with mathematical anxiety. However, new research
indicates that most kids with high mathematics anxiety do not perform poorly in math. To
lower math anxiety and promote increased absorption of mathematics, teachers and parents
have a role to play. Numerous children and adults report experiencing math anxiety, which is
a common perception of mathematics as being an especially challenging topic. There is
convincing evidence that there is a correlation between math anxiety and test performance,
with more math anxiety being associated with lower math test results. Although it is unclear
which comes first anxiety or deficient performance it is a circle: fear of arithmetic causes
avoidance of practice, which negatively impacts grades, which in turn affects anxiety, and so
on. (Lyons, 2020).
Every activity we engage in, including cooking, buying, and travel, involves
mathematics. We would not have access to all these fantastic cooking techniques today if it
were not for math. We utilize arithmetic mathematics to determine what to buy for our culinary
items, how much of it we need, and how much it will cost us, making it easier for us to shop.
To determine how far we should go and how much time we should allow for our journey, we
use fundamental mathematics every day.
The essay discusses the purpose and nature of mathematics at its conclusion. Math is
defined as a purposeful exploration of theoretical concepts like numbers, forms, sums, and
instances with the use of reasoning and rule-detailing skills. It evolved from necessary
estimation and counting to become a crucial tool for research and creativity. The usefulness of
mathematics is highlighted, particularly in advancing mechanical and logical growth. It has
been observed that mathematics serves as the foundation for showing and understanding
intricate regular oddities, inspiring advancements in numerous sectors. The work also discusses
science anxiety, showing how it is related to poor math performance and what role parents and
teachers may have in easing this tension. Additionally, it emphasizes the necessity of arithmetic
in everyday activities like cooking, shopping, and travel, demonstrating its practical usefulness
in several spheres of life.
