Fourier Transform and its

properties
Unit 1
What is signal?
It refers to any time varying voltage, current or electromagnetic
wave that carries information.
A signal is an electrical or electromagnetic current that is used for
carrying data from one device or network to another.

Time domain signal and frequency domain signal

How a signal changes over a particular time
How much signal lies over given frequency band.
Electrical signals have both time and frequency domain
representations. In the time domain, voltage or current is
expressed as a function of time. In FD signal, sum and
integration of signal (sine, cosine, harmonics form of signal)
What is Fourier transform?
Fourier was a mathematician in 1822. He give Fourier series and
Fourier transform to convert a signal into frequency domain.
A given function or signal can be converted between the time and
frequency domains with a pair of mathematical operators
called transforms.

If we want to analyze an image then at first we have to convert it into

frequency domain at the transmitter and then need to convert back
into original shape so inverse transform is there.
Dirichlet’s Condition:
Transient signal satisfies two conditions given below
1. The function should have finite value of minima and maxima.
2. Function should be absolutely integrable, means the area
under the curve should be finite.
if we want to calculate FT of unit step function, it is a constant
value of 1. and if we integrate with respect to infinite limits,
t h e n a n s w e r i s i n f i n i t y, i t m e a n u ( t ) i s n o t fo u r i e r
transformable.
