Date: December 6, 2023 Subject: Inferring - Videos

Objectives (skills/attitudes/understandings): Conclusions can be judgements reached

based on information that is stated in or inferred from texts.

Learning outcomes:
KUSP’s:
- Comprehension and interpretation of texts requires attention to explicit and implicit
contextual information and ideas.
- infer meanings from texts based on context clues.
- Interpret and draw conclusions from texts using stated and implied ideas or
information
- Distinguish between information that is stated and inferred.
- Analyze ideas and information using text evidence.

Essential questions:
How can evidence/clues be used to make inferences?
How can evidence support our inferences?
How can we infer a video?

Intro (5 Slide 20 - Inferring Riddle (pumpkin)

minutes) Introduce todays Inference Lesson - Videos

Body Slide 21 - For the Birds (7 minutes)

20 minutes - Before playing the video tell students to pay attention to the video
watching for any clues that may tell us what is happening in the
video
- Set up a chart on the white board with three headings: Clues,
Background knowledge, and Inference
- There is no speaking/dialogue in these videos so it is up to us to
infer what is happening in the videos
Pause points (write down these observations underneath the Clues
heading)
- 1:08 Little birds mimic the big bird & the little birds laugh at the big
bird
- 1:20 Big bird tries talking to the little birds and they walk away
- 1:45 Little birds yell when the big bird joins them
- 2:05 Little birds peck at the big bird's feet
Slide 22 - What do we already know? Write down under the Background
Knowledge heading
Ask students what background knowledge they are connecting the clues
to before writing down the answers
- People mimic others they don't like
- People laugh at those they don’t like and is a form of bullying
Date: December 6, 2023 Subject: Inferring - Videos

- If I don’t want to be around someone I walk away

- People try to make others uncomfortable when we don’t want them
around
- If people don't like you they may do mean things
What can we infer based on our clues and background knowledge??
- The little birds do not like the big bird
- The little birds are bullies

Partly Cloudy Video 6 minutes - Slide 24 (13 minutes)

1) Explain to students that as we watch the second video I will be
pausing again at important points, students will write down any
clues they notice while watching the film
2) Students will jot down any observations they notice while watching
the video and write down the examples from the pause points
- pay attention to characters, setting, lighting, interactions between
characters
3) After we watch the video students can work alone or with a partner
to fill in the rest of their inference sheets (background knowledge
and their inferences)
- What do students know about this behavior already? Does it
connect to their prior experiences or knowledge?
- Turn down lights and play Video (6 minutes)
Pause points
- 1:52 the stork keeps coming back even though the cloud makes
dangerous animals
- 2:45 the stork keeps getting injured by the animals
- 4:07 the stork flies to another cloud for help
- 4:15 the stork comes back with protective gear
- 4:19 the stork hugs its clouds
Partly Cloudy Organizer - Slide 25 (5 minutes)
- Lights back on!!
- Reveal the answers on this slide one at a time
- Ask students to share before revealing the second and third box
- Does the evidence support the inference?

Conclusion What are the steps to making an inference? Slide 26 and 27 - reveal
(5 minutes) answer
1) Carefully reviewing the text/image/video
2) Identify the clues
3) Connect the clues to our background knowledge
4) Then make an educated guess also known as an INFERENCE
