EL NINO PHENOMENON
Title of the Activity
Objectives:
1. Describe how the four subsystems are interconnected in the El Nino phenomenon
Materials:
Video clip on El Nino
Procedure:
1. Watch the video lesson particularly the El Nino Phenomenon.
2. Analyze also the picture below and write your observations and answer the questions.
Questions:
1. What is El Nino?
El Niño is a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern
tropical Pacific Ocean. El Nino is the “warm phase” of a larger phenomenon called the El Nino-
Southern Oscillation (ENSO). El Niño means “the little child” or “Christ child” in Spanish.
5. How is energy transferred among the various spheres of the Earth System?
Energy is transferred between earth’s surface and the atmosphere in variety of ways including
radiation, conduction, and convection.
6. What other parts of the Earth may experience the effects of El Nino?
Although El Niño has the most direct impact on life in the equatorial Pacific, its effects
propagate north and south along the coast of the Americas, affecting marine life all around the
Pacific.
7. How are the different spheres of the Earth System affected by El Nino?
Droughts may make the earth’s surface very dry. They have an impact on the amount of water
in the hydrosphere as well as the water vapor in the atmosphere.
Droughts can cause the geosphere to be very dry. Droughts can affect the survival of organisms
in the biosphere. Droughts can affect the amount of water in the hydrosphere.
8. In the space below, write the weather effects El Nino has on the area where you live.
The main effects that El Niño has on our area are the extreme temperature rise and a little
rainfall, which lead to a wide range of health problems, including disease outbreaks,
malnutrition, heat stroke/stress, and respiratory diseases.
Generalization:
The presence of the EI-Nino leads to an increase in sea-surface temperatures. It weakens the
trade winds in the regions, resulting in heavy rainfall, floods, or droughts in various parts of the
world.
'Temperature rise leads to odd climatic changes'.
