for SCIENCE for Grade 9
Quarter 3 / Week 7

FOREWORD
This self-learning kit will serve as a guide in identifying
certain climatic phenomena that occur on a global level
specifically the impacts of climate change to our
environment.
You might be thinking that only few from us are
experiencing the said phenomenon, but to our dismay all
living creatures are now affected.
To study further and be aware of this climatic
phenomenon different activities are given to the learners.

2
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
K: describe the causes and effects of climate change;
S: identify the impacts of climate change particularly in the
Philippines, and
A: cite ways on how to prevent /minimize the effects of
climate change to the environment.

LEARNING COMPETENCY
Describe certain climatic phenomena that occur on a
global level. (S9ES – IIIf – 31)

I. WHAT HAPPENED
The climate is always changing. It has shown how much it
could affect our lives. There are times we experienced long period
of rainy days or sunny days. Remember how strong the winds and
heavy rainfall of Rolly and Ulysses that hit the province of
Catanduanes and the rest of Bicol region? The destruction brought
by typhoon Rolly and Ulysses reminds everyone who maybe asked,
why is this happening? Maybe because something has change? Is
climate change the cause of it?

Activity 1. Directions: Arrange the following jumbled letters to form

a word. Write C if they describe a climatic phenomenon, and N if
not. Copy and answer the table in your notebook.

Activity 2. Directions: Write T if the following statements are true to
climate change and F if not. Write your answers in your notebook.

____1. Climate change is purely natural.

____2. Earth’s orbit can cause climate change.
____3. Human activities also contribute to climate change.
____4. The largest contributor to climate change is the burning of
fossil fuels.
____5. Greenhouse gases affect climate.
____6. Planting and growing trees can help to prevent climate
change.
____7. Throwing wastes anywhere and burning plastics do not
affect climate.
____8. Climate change is both natural and man-made.
____9. Global warming is one of the major effects of climate
change.
____10. Climate change controls worldwide deaths from
malnutrition and heat stress.

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS
Philippines is the third most vulnerable country to climate
change according to the 2017 world risk report. Impacts of climate
change in the Philippines are immense, including: changes in
rainfall patterns and distribution, droughts, threats to biodiversity
and food security, sea level rise, public health risks, and
endangerment of vulnerable groups such as women and
indigenous people.
Approximately 1 million hectares of grasslands in the Philippines
are highly vulnerable to climate change in the future. Most
grasslands in the uplands are prone to fires particularly during
extended periods of dryness and lack of rainfall during summer.
Climate change is
happening now. Evidences
being seen support the fact that
the change cannot simply be
explained by natural variation.
The most recent scientific
assessments have confirmed
that this warming of the climate
system since the mid-20th

human activities; and thus, is due
to the observed increase in
greenhouse gas concentrations from human activities, such as the
burning of fossil fuels and land use change. Current warming has
increasingly posed quite considerable challenges to man and the
environment and will continue to do so in the future. Presently, some
autonomous adaptation is taking place, but we need to consider
a more pro-active adaptation planning in order to ensure
sustainable development.

Aside from these impacts of the climate change that we are

experiencing, we still have two cyclical events that we encounter,
the El Niño and La Niña.

NegOr_Q3_Science9_SLKWeek7_v2

5
El Niño is an abnormal and lengthy warming in the eastern
part of the Pacific Ocean. This natural phenomenon occurs at
irregular intervals of two to seven years and last for nine months or
two years at most. Usually it starts at the end of the year or during
the Christmas season that is why is termed as El Niño which refers to
the “Christ the child”.
Since the Pacific
Ocean is to the east
of the Philippines, the
El Niño phenomenon
will affect the
country. When there
is an increase of the
temperature in the
eastern part of the
Pacific Ocean it is
expected that some
areas in the
Philippines will

climatic
phenomenon. Some areas in the country will experience near to
above average rainfall and some areas will experience drier than
normal rainfall. El Niño will most likely bring severe drought.
La Niña is the opposite climatic disturbance to El Niña. This
natural phenomenon may, but does not always follow El Niño
events. It may last for nine to twelve months but in some cases, it
last for two years. This event is triggered by the cooling of the
eastern part of the Pacific Ocean that is why it is sometimes called
“cold Pacific”.
Some ways to prevent climate change
1. Plant a tree
2. Recycling waste
3. Plant your own vegetable garden
4. No to burning of plastics, rubbers and similar waste
5. Power your home with renewable energy
