Teaching Ideas
Success Criteria: • To understand that the reverse process is the inverse function.
Context: A topic required of GCSE Higher tier students only, this lesson should be taught after introduction to
functions. Students should be confident at rearranging formula and have a sound understanding of
how function notation works.
Starter
Display two tables. Each has the input and output of a function. Students should work out what the functions are, then fill in the
gaps. The first one is fairly straightforward and can be completed using their understanding of sequences; the second one is a bit
trickier and can be answered by forming and solving simultaneous equations or using trial and error. Very able students should be
encouraged to try the former method first.
Main Activities
Inverse Functions
Start by showing students the meaning of the phrase ‘inverse function’ and how we can initially think of them as a reverse of a
function machine. Then, discuss the same example but using the method of swapping y and x.
Your Turn
Students find the inverse of the functions listed. Encourage students to pick an input and output and substitute it in to check their
answers. An Inverse Functions Extension Activity Sheet is provided, the answers to which are on the PowerPoint.
Plenary
Present the real-life application of functions. These questions should be done in pairs. Most, if not all, students will know how
to find the first example, but the second is a bit trickier and relies on general knowledge so some hints might need to be given!
