Cover sheet

The chosen genre for this Bilingual Re-Design project was the fact sheet. For the

English version, the intended audience is students from all over the world who recently

started studying business. Also, the purpose is to inform the impact of globalization on

people's quality of life. For the Spanish version, the intended audience is students of the

Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, who study business. In addition, the purpose is

similar to the previous one, that is, to report on how globalization affects the quality of

life of people globally.

Regarding the content of my fact sheet in both languages, I included certain parts

of my literature review, such as an overview of globalization in recent decades and Main

ideas about the positive and negative aspects of globalization. Besides, I added specific

information on perceptions and evaluation of globalization and quality of life around the

world and the true impact of globalization on the quality of life. For the English version,

I included the main advantages and disadvantages of globalization, perceptions and

assessment of the quality of life, and the impact of globalization on the quality of life. For

the Spanish version, I added some studies about globalization, the closest definition of

quality of life, and researches about the evaluation of the quality of life.

On the other hand, considering the form of my fact sheets for both languages,

the features I included were connectors, an eye-catching title, and two pages in length.

Furthermore, I used natural and informal language, data, pictures, bullets, and references,

which are the end of the paper. However, some features for the English version are a long

introduction about the topic in the first section, the use of many phrases to share new
research findings, a more neutral and more professional design, more text than images or

graphics, and the use of the third person. Moreover, some features that the Spanish version

has are a short overview of the topic, pictures, a few phrases that share new research

findings, and colorful designs. Also, I added more illustrations than text, the use of the

third and second person, and several questions as subtitles.

I made these decisions because students of the Peruvian University of Applied

Sciences have more prior knowledge of globalization and tend to spend less time reading

text-heavy fact sheets, as they are much more visual. In addition, students, in general, do

not have a consistent reading habit and tend to memorize information. However, students

who are studying business recently around the world have a more general idea. Moreover,

this last group generally has reading habits as part of their culture and can spend a lot of

time acquiring information from different genres, such as a fact sheet. Also, they learn

further knowledge in their first stage of the university and constantly use critical thinking

to develop their ideas and arguments.

Does globalization
affect people's
quality of life?
Overview
Globalization has become one of the most controversial topics during the last three decades,
and it is considered a phenomenon causing many changes that can influence the quality of
human life (Clausing, 2019; Majeed, 2016). Many theories and methodologies have been
made use of broadly study the socioeconomic aspects of globalization (Baum, 2016).
However, all these researches cannot give a concise answer regarding the big impact that
globalization generates on the quality of life.
The effects of globalization on quality of life arise
because of their different concepts. In addition, both Currently, it is

demonstrations are carried out by anti-capitalist people
(Sirgy et al., 2016).

Globalization and its positive and negative side

Globalization, apart from being considered a contentious concept, is often perceived in
different ways (Sandikci et al., 2015). The diversity of its definitions demonstrates lots of
notions authors have, and it indicates that globalization has several dimensions that affect
all its changes. Likewise, the impact of globalization has been perceived in the same way.

development. One of the main causes of poverty.
Quality of life: perceptions and assessment
Quality of life is perceived as a complex notion, which is often described as social well-
being and life satisfaction (Majeed, 2016; Sandikci et al., 2015 ). It is based on philosophical
systems, pleasant life experiences, and the satisfaction of needs. Moreover, it is closely
related to external factors in society and positive and negative individualistic influences. It
also refers to the extent to which countries generate good opportunities for people,
creating economic prosperity .

Not surprisingly, the assessment of the quality of life has been

investigated using various research models and information systems.
Majeed (2016) mentions that by not having an exact evaluation,
several hypotheses were created. For example, GDP is the wrong
determinant of quality of life, basic needs do not require money,
and economic growth makes people happy.

The impact of globalization on the quality of life

Some studies talk about the impact of globalization on quality of life, considering the factors
and variables which determine it. The most relevant investigations only refer to the first or
the second concept individually. As a result, several limitations arise that discourage
researchers from evaluating this influence on all aspects (Clausing, 2019). These
aforementioned conditions pose certain limits to knowing the precious results.

World GDP per capita It has increased six times during the 20th century
(Majeed, 2016). People who live in integrated countries
report greater satisfaction but it created even more
inequalities between the rich and poor.

Poverty
It is increasing significantly. Some people live on less
than two dollars a day, and in Africa people in
extreme poverty have increased by 80 million
(Sirgy et al., 2016).
It is argued that globalization creates positive outcomes for rich countries but negative
outcomes for poor ones. However, today poverty even exists in the United States, one
of the most developed economies, where almost 26% of its inhabitants are very
hungry (Majeed, 2016). References

Reflection Letter

Dear Professor Turrentine,

I am writing to you because I want to share with you some key points about my re-design
project process.

Firstly, in the unit one, I learned many relevant ideas about the literature review genre.
Some of them are related to the analysis of literature reviews in my academic discipline,
including the purpose, audience, and certain rhetorical choices according to the context
of each paper. In addition, I learned to identify their structure, design features, authors'
tone, and mechanical development. These ideas helped me to prepare my literature review
correctly. I understood the conventions used by authors to achieve the goal of the article,
the way they use effective language, and the content of each source depending on the
audience. Also, the knowledge of these two units was useful in creating my re-design
project because they created a foundation about rhetorical situations and their influence
on texts, and told a story about a current problem related to the discipline of business. I
was able to synthesize the most important information of my project two, use rhetorical
choices, and adapt my text to the genre of fact sheets in two languages (English and
Spanish). I find these key ideas strengthen my writing skills and give me a more accurate
approach for my future writing assignments, as I can respond to many text contexts with
different purposes.

Secondly, the interactions with peers and all the activities allowed me to understand the
pillars of a literature review and how to adapt to different rhetorical situations.
Furthermore, I was able to share opinions with my peers. It helped me to be aware of my
mistakes, step out of my comfort zone, and become a better writer. I was also able to
grasp research methods, demonstrate familiarity with the main ideas of the topic, and act
upon each of my classmates' comments. It is worth mentioning that the post-class
assignments helped me to evaluate sources, create analyses, compare reliable data, and
revise my texts. Therefore, I affirm that these experiences positively influenced my
process during the entire course period, including brainstorming, planning, drafting, and
the revision process of my projects. This is due to the fact that they are part of a strategy
that helps to understand the learning process before, during, and at the end of each project.
Also, this progressive development allowed me to make adjustments and improve the
objectives of each project, achieving all the competencies satisfactorily.

Finally, throughout this course I have improved my writing skills, such as research,
summarizing, outlining, good use of grammar and clarity, proofreading, editing, and
communication skills. Choosing accurate information, structuring a text, using the rules
of English grammar, editing texts, and communicating a purpose is essential for my
student and professional life, regardless of the field of study. Ongoing activities and in-
class explanations will help reinforce these skills, exploit my critical thinking and use
resources to create my re-design project successfully. On the other hand, I will use all
these skills in my daily life and all college courses, as written interactions are increasing
in the world today, and these strong skills help readers understand the key points of what
we are trying to convey. In addition, these skills are used when writing a resume, cover
letter, and interview. Today, I feel prepared to start with the courses in my curriculum,
play a good role as a writer in all areas of my life, and cement ideas and concepts in my
mind. It will contribute to building an optimal professional image and further my career
opportunities.

Sincerely,
Maria Vilchez
