Subject: Crochet Instructions Usability Testing
Dear
Content Director,
We have conducted the usability test on How to Crochet For Absolute Beginners. After all
tests were taken, it was determined that the three subjects properly made it through the instructions up
until it came to yarning over and creating a chain. However, the subjects all agreed that the instruction
manual was very clear, concise, and to the point, but changes need to be made due to some confusions:

• The order of how to tie a slipknot and how to hold yarn needs to be switched
• Include tightening the slipknot around the hook after tying it
• Include that in order to begin yarning over, the knot of the slipknot must be pinched between the
thumb and middle finger
• Include that there needs to be tension in the yarn between the hook and your hand

Once the changes above and in the memo are made and have been approved, we will
perform the usability test again to confirm that they are helpful and update our
understanding of the instruction’s effectiveness.
Thank you,
Mikala Wheeler

Hello everyone! I am writing this to inform you about the results of our usability testing
for How to Crochet for Absolute Beginners. I would also like to request approval for some
changes to the instruction manual after the tests we conducted. We were able to test
the step-by-step instructions on Tuesday, October 3rd with three users. After reviewing
the instructions, the subjects gave us some valuable feedback that addressed some
minor concerns. For example, brief information that could be explained better,
enlargement of images, and abbreviation edits.

Summary
Overall, all test subjects and users were confused by one part of the manual. Therefore, there were a few
modifications we have made to the document for a better experience for our customers. For instance,
we need to switch where “Tying a Slipknot” and “Holding Your Yarn” are in the instructions, since having
holding your yarn first confused the subjects. We found that in all tests, pinching the knot of the slipknot,
as well as tightening the slipknot it wasn’t clear in the instructions. It also seems that tension in the yarn
was left out of the instructions. We also found that test subjects would like to see better detailed
instructions for how to start a chain.

Results
User Observation & Subsequent Changes
Users found that the instruction manual was simple and easy to understand. They all
three agreed that the yarning over and starting a chain section was confusing. All steps except for “Tying
a Slipknot”, and “Holding Your Yarn” were in the correct and proper order, all tips provided under steps
were helpful. As they completed the tasks, users expressed their thoughts on what could change for the
better.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we have taken the results of our usability analysis and have used them
to modify the How to Crochet for Absolute Beginners instructions. This included edits to
Yarning over, Starting a Chain, changing the order of “Tying a Slipknot” and “Holding Your Yarn”,
tightening slipknot around the hook, pinching the knot of the slipknot between middle finger and
thumb, showing how to hold yarn, and including tension. We hope that these modifications will help the
experience of the user making their chains!
Recommendation
We recommend the following changes, reflected in the linked [website].
• Switch order of “How to Tie a Slipknot”, and “How to Hold Your Yarn”.
• Include tightening slipknot around the hook and pinching the knot of the slipknot between middle
finger and thumb.
• Better demonstration of how to hold your yarn.
 Include tension of yarn between the hook and your hand and why it’s important
