Subject Line: How to French Braid Hair Usability Testing

Dear Marketing Director,

Earlier today we conducted a usability test on the How to French Braid Hair instructions. I had three
different people test the instructions and for the most part all the tests went fairly well; the subjects
enjoyed the task and completed the entire set of instructions provided. There were only a few changes
that we would like to bring attention to that we think could improve the audiences’ overall experience,
those include:

 Providing more detailed pictures that go along with each step to minimize confusion.
 Clarify what it means to add more hair to each strand has you braid.
 Mentioning to start at the top of the head when beginning the braid.
 Including arrows to help demonstrate how to cross the left and right sections of hair.

Adding tips on how to hold the strands of hair when starting the braiding process to help the subject feel
more comfortable.

As soon as the changes mentioned above are made, we will conduct another usability test with the
updated document of instructions. This round of testing will help confirm whether the changes made are
helpful, as well as providing us with an insight into the effectiveness of the instructions.

Thank you,

Hello everyone. I am writing you to inform you all on the results from the How to French Braid Hair
usability testing that was conducted earlier today, as well as the approved changes that were discussed
based off the feedback from the subjects. We were gladly able to test the instructions on Tuesday the 3 rd
with three subjects. This provided us with new information on how to improve the instructions for a
better experience. Some examples include providing pictures to go along with each step and inserting
captions to go along with those pictures for further explanation.

Summary
Overall, the subjects were pleased and satisfied with the How to French Braid Hair instructions during
the test. There were only a few changes that needed to be fixed on the document for a better outcome
for the customers. There weren’t too many complaints made about the document, the main one that
kept reoccurring from all three test subjects was that there needed to be pictures provided for all steps.
They made comments about how “a picture here would’ve been easier to follow along with”. This would
allow them an easier visualization of what to do than have them imagine it themselves. We also found
that the users preferred to have more tips available to them. As well as adding arrows to the pictures
used to demonstrate which way to move the hair strands to make it less confusing. One of the users
pointed out how we need to provide a detailed image of how to add pieces of hair to the braid as you’re
braiding down the head and include that you need to start the braid at the top of the head for more
clarification.

Results
User Observations
Collectively the users found the instructions easy to follow and simple to understand. All three agreed
that the images provided were extremely helpful and the steps were in the correct order of fashion to
understand. The tips that were provided were also expressed to be helpful and the layout of the
instructions were pleasing to the eye and not distracting. As the users completed the task, they all voiced
their opinion on how to make the document better.

Editing the Images

All three users agreed that including at least one image for each step would increase the effectiveness of
the instructions as well as make it more helpful since some of the steps were confusing to follow. The
second user did not understand what it meant to add pieces of hair to the left and right strands as you
go down the head, so we need to either change the wording or add a detailed image to step 5 making it
easier to understand. Clarifying the pictures used through the use of arrows to demonstrate the folding
technique of braiding hair.

Provide More Tips

The first user mentioned that there needs to be a tip inserted in step 1 or 2 to start the braid at the top
of the head. Also including tips of how to hold the three strands of hair to allow the users to feel more
comfortable as they begin the braiding process.

Conclusion
We’ve taken the results of the usability testing and used them to change and modify the How to French
Braid Hair instructions. Those changes including providing more images to each step, including more tips
for challenging steps, using arrows to demonstrate the folding pattern, mentioning to start at the top of
the head when beginning, and providing a detailed image to step 5 to make it clearer to understand. We
hope these modifications will help improve the experience of the customers learning how to French
braid hair for the first time.

Recommendation
We recommend the following changes, reflected in the linked [website].

 Correct step 5’s image to a more detailed one.

 Add arrows to the images showing the folding pattern of a braid.
 Include at least one image for every step.
 Include more tips on how to comfortably hold the beginning three strands.
 Mention to start the braid at the top of the head.
