Subject: Revisions Addressed in “How to make Tortellini Tomato Soup” Instructions

Last week, we conducted a usability test in relation to a set of instructions that we have been preparing
for publishing. In this test, our goal was to assess how accessible and efficient our instructions are. We
had five participants engage in this trial run without receiving any vital input or tips and only included
what they would absolutely need in order to participate in the test. Participants of a broad range of ages
and lifestyles were included in order to avoid biased results.

Summary

Feedback was generally positive amongst our five usability test participants. I was also able to obtain a
number of points of recommendation given to us based on the users’ experiences. One suggestion is to
enhance the colors and design of the webpage. I opted to address these points by adding some extra
images and color detail in our headings which add to our overall theme. Another suggestion we
received was to change certain fonts in order to create a less formal and more nonchalant presentation.
After our usability test concluded, we asked some questions to gauge where our focus should reside
next in order to have this webpage meet our standards.

Results

The results were pleasing overall, with most users reporting little to no confusion while proceeding
through the steps. One user noted that a color other than white as the backdrop could benefit the overall
aesthetic of a recipe. Of all of the feedback received, the most popular suggestion from users is more
images throughout the document. Two users noted that they would like to see images other than the
finished product in order to avoid confusion throughout the steps (Visually Guided Steps). In order to
get the most concise results possible, we compiled the results of our feedback into a list format in order
to assess where we should focus our efforts directly to improve.
1. Finding 1: Information Presentation
- Users reported that ingredients were rather confusing as descriptions on amounts were not
explicitly stated.
- To address this, it was suggested simply to distinguish amounts properly.
2. Finding 2: Theme and Design
- Users reported that the overall color and design should be revised.
- To address this report, more images and color with borders were added.
- Also, some users noted that a sequence of images could be utilized to add coherence to the
overall recipe and add some visual guidance for the audience.

Conclusion

Upon analyzing our results, we found that users had general ease in navigating the webpage and
instructions. Given the deadline we are facing, I have made effort to address and resolve these issues
with haste. The most notable issues we have discovered seem to be our presentation, step coherence,
and lack of imagery. I have made some mock-up revisions/recommendations myself that I will be
listing below. I would really appreciate any feedback that you may have and do not hesitate to contact
me with any concerns or issues that arise.

Recommendations
I have made a more concise rundown of the recommendations suggested to our team. As you can see,
recommendations fall generally into the design aspect of the document.
• Change the color and font of the headings to correlate with the theme more
• Provide volumes and masses of ingredients used
• Include images on steps one and two to display the subsequent results of added ingredients
