Dear Content Director,

We have conducted the usability test on the How to Draw an Eye instruction paper.
The tests went exceptionally well, all of the test subjects found it easy and fun and
really liked the design of it. In the end, there were a few changes that we would like to
add. My team and I believe that if these changes were to be implemented, we would
see a surge in sales, especially from school districts. In the mock-up included with the
following memo, we request that you change the following:
• Added more detailed instructions to some of the steps.
• Provided more colors to draw in details.
• Made the images bigger to allow more visibility.
• Created a few extra steps to show how you got from one drawing to the next.
These changes aren’t major, just minor things to help people and younger people learn
how to draw an eye the easy way. Once the changes in the following memo have been
approved, we will perform a subsequent usability test to update our knowledge of the
instruction’s effectiveness.

Best,

Hello everyone. I am writing to inform you of all of the results of our usability test for
the How to Draw an Eye instruction paper, as well as to request approval for a few
changes based on the test results. We conducted the test on October 3rd, 2023 with
three participants. All the participants said that the instructions were clean and easy to
understand. At the end of the test, I asked some questions regarding the instructions,
and I got a lot of feedback on what to change and how to make it better.

Summary
All three participants had nothing but good things to say about the instructions, but
still requested a few minor changes. The instruction packet included 9 steps on how to
draw an eye, accompanied by a blank piece of paper, pencils, and colored pencils.
Each step has a few words describing what to do in that particular step. The images
are large enough to where you wouldn’t need a lot of words to describe what’s
happening because you can see it. The first thing that all three participants said it
needed was more colors added to the drawing on each step. They said it would make
the steps look more professional than just black and white. Second, they asked to
make the images bigger to see the smaller details. One of the steps was to add a very
small detail that none of the participants could see very well. Third, one of the
participants requested that we add an extra step on how to draw the eyelashes. They
understood the basics but thought it would be nice to have a step dedicated to it.

Results
User Observation and Subsequent Changes
All participants were really positive when discussing the instructions. All of them had
a very clear understanding of what was being asked of them and how to do certain
steps. During the test, they didn’t have to ask me what was going on or tell me what
they were confused about. All three said that it was clear and concise. The layout and
the images with the steps made it easy to understand what was supposed to be drawn
in each step. The font was easy to skim through, and the steps weren’t super detailed,
which the users liked. In regard to the instructions, the users had some comments and
notes:
• They liked the way the sketches are in black and white like a traditional pencil
drawing, but they wished there was more color to enhance the sketches.
• All participants said the images were too small for the amount of detail they
had to add to it.
• One of the participants asked for more steps in regards to adding eyelashes and
adding color.
• The test providers noted that there was a sense of disappointment if their sketch
didn’t match the one provided. Users believe it would be better to add at the top
before the instructions begin, “This is just a basic instruction on how to draw an
eye. Do not be disappointed if your amazing art doesn’t look exactly like the
ones provided. Keep practicing!”
• Two users suggested that the font be changed to something a bit more fun and
colorful.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we took the results of the usability test and applied them to the
instructions to make a few changes. This included changing the image sizes, adding
more color, adding positive notes, and adding a few more steps. I believe the changes
will help other users one day, especially if this were to be used as a tool for art classes
or something of the sort. We hope these changes will support all future artists who
want to learn how to draw an eye.

Recommendation
Because we would like to continue with these instructions, we recommend the
following changes in the paper:
• Change the font to something more fun.
• Add more color to the paper.
• Add more steps and elaborate just a bit more.
• Make the images larger.
• Insert positive notes at the beginning.
• Add color to each image in each step.
• Make the font a little larger.
• Get rid of the bold outlines and substitute for subtle ones.
• Create a better intro to make it sound intriguing.
