SC 639 Assignment 4

Due date: 10-11-2023 (Friday), 1700 hours

Instructions:

• All questions carry equal weightage.

• Handwritten and typeset, both forms of submissions are acceptable.

• Answers should be legible. Excessive cutting, scratching, overwriting shall be penal-

ized.

• Every answer to a particular question should be written on a different fresh page; for
example do not start writing a solution for Q2 right after the end of Q1. Start from a
new page.

• If a question have several parts, do not write solution of individual parts on different
pages. Solution to all parts should be written one after another.

• If submitting typset in LATEX, proof read your answer scripts before submitting. Any
cribs related to typos will not be considered.

• The questions under ”Graded questions” will be checked by the TAs. Practice questions
are for your benefit. Please don’t submit solutions to any of the Practice questions for
grading.

• Please submit your assignments at the SysCon office (i.e. the first room on your right
as you enter the SysCon building and not Prof Banavar’s office) before 5:00 PM of any
working day before the deadline.

Graded Questions:

1. Calculate the Jacobian matrices for the following

(a) ℝ2 ∋ (𝑥, 𝑦) ↦ 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥 + 𝑦2 ) ∈ ℝ,

(b) ℝ𝑛 ∋ 𝑥 ↦ 𝑓(𝑥) = (‖𝑥‖) ∈ ℝ.

2. Let 𝑓 ∶ ℝ𝑛 × ℝ𝑚 → ℝ𝑝 be a bilinear function. Prove that, 𝐷𝑓(𝑎, 𝑏).(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑓(𝑎, 𝑦) +

𝑓(𝑥, 𝑏).

3. Let 𝑓 ∶ ℝ → ℝ be of class 𝐶 1 and let 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) ≠ 0 for all 𝑥 ∈ ℝ. Show that 𝑓 is an

injective map.

4. Let 𝑓 ∶ ℝ3 {0} → ℝ be a function defined as

1
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) =
√𝑥2 + 𝑦2 + 𝑧 2

show that
𝜕 2𝑓 𝜕 2𝑓 𝜕 2𝑓
+ + 2 =0 ∀ (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧).
𝜕𝑥2 𝜕𝑦2 𝜕𝑧
5. Find the equation of tangent plane for the following surface

𝑆 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ∈ ℝ3 ∶ sin 𝑥𝑦 + sin 𝑦𝑧 + sin 𝑥𝑧 = 1}

at (1, 𝜋/2, 0) .

6. Let 𝑓 ∶ 𝑈 → 𝐹 be of class 𝐶 1 on an open set 𝑈 ⊂ 𝐸. Let 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) be invertible for all

𝑥 ∈ 𝑈 , then show that 𝑓(𝑈 ) is open. (Hint - local inverse, properties of open sets,
properties of bijective maps.)
