QUESTION 1 [20 Marks]

a) Determine the location of the neutral axis (𝑦̅) from the bottom as a reference line
b) Evaluate the moment of inertia (Itotal) of the section
c) Evaluate the shearing stresses in different locations at top, bottom surfaces, junction
of web and flange (A, B) and neutral axis in Figure 1.
d) Establishing a sketch of the shear stress profile of a beam from the top to the bottom
e) Evaluate the maximum shear stress in the beam if the wide-flange beam is subjected
to a shear of V = 50 kN.

QUESTION 2 [20 Marks]

A beam is constructed from three boards bolted together as shown in Figure 2. Determine the
shear force developed in each bolt if the bolts are spaced s = 300 mm apart and the applied
shear is V = 50 kN.

is shown in Figure 3.The nails are located on each side of the beam and are spaced 100 mm
apart. Each nail has a diameter of 4 mm.Take P = 5 kN.

QUESTION 4 [20 Marks]

The stresses acting on element A on the web of a train rail (Figure 4 part a) are found to be
45 MPa tension in the horizontal direction and 120 MPa compression in the vertical direction
(see Figure part b). Also, shear stresses with a magnitude of 25 MPa act in the directions shown
in Figure 4(b). Evaluate the
i) corresponding average stress (σave) and the maximum shearing stress (tmax)

ii) principal planes (qp and qs) and the principal stress (σmax and σmin)

iii) normal and shearing stresses after the element shown has been rotated through 15º
clockwise

iv) normal and shearing stresses after the element shown have been rotated through a 30º
counterclockwise direction.

v) sketch the answers (ii), (iii), and (iv) in Mohr’s circle.

CONFIDENTIAL 2324I/BMM3323

An element in plane stress is subjected to stresses x = 50 MPa and xy = 42 MPa (see figure).
It is known that one of the principal stresses equals 55 Mpa in tension.
(a) Determine the stress y.
(b) Determine the other principal stress and the orientation of the principal planes, then show
the principal stresses on a sketch of a properly oriented element.
