3.5. Safety features

The safety features on the BOXRUNNER are state-of-the-art.
Some features such as EMERGENCY STOP, emergency limit switches, brakes are
safety related components that are not allowed to be changed.
The functions of the safety features do not release the driver from the obligation
to take due care when using the vehicle.

3.5.1. Emergency movement stop buttons and emergency stop buttons

Emergency  1x left cabin console
movement
stop buttons  4 x on the spreader

Spreader stop In case of danger, actuating this emergency movement stop button stops:
 The telescopic movement of the spreader and the locking of the twistlocks
 Lateral adjustment
 Lifting and lowering.
The diesel motor remains on, steering and service brake are operational, lighting
and two-way radio are on.
The emergency movement stop buttons can be unlocked again by twisting.

“BOXRUNNER  1 x on cabin control module

stop"
emergency  4 x on the chassis
stop button  1 x chassis control module
 2x on the machine platform
The BOXRUNNER shuts down immediately if the "E-Stop" emergency stop button
is actuated.
 The diesel engine is switched off; the parking brakes are applied immedi-
ately.
 Steering, lifting/lowering are stopped.
 Spreader movements and lateral adjustments of the yoke beam are
stopped.
The lighting and two-way radio remain in operation, the service brakes can be ac-
tuated 5 times more.

Actuating the "E-Stop" emergency stop button when driving around a bend will
increase the risk of tipping.

3.5.2. Brakes
Service brake The BOXRUNNER is equipped with a hydraulic two-circuit brake system that is in-
stalled symmetrically in the right and left chassis. Hydraulically actuated brake
pistons press against a spring onto immersed multiple disk brakes in the wheel
gear. The greater the brake pressure, the greater the braking force. When no
pressure is applied, the springs release the service brake. The multiple disk
brakes are externally cooled.
The oil pressure in the service brake and parking brake is monitored by the PLC.
On the occurrence of a fault, an error message appears on the display. If the error
message "Fehler Lenk-/Bremsrechner" (Steering/braking computer error) is indi-
cated on the display, you must shut down the BOXRUNNER and inform mainte-
nance service.
On pressing the brake pedal up to 30 % of the travel is braked regeneratively via
the frequency regulation for the propulsion motors, after that only using the brake
hydraulics. The two processes overlap.

Parking brake The BOXRUNNER is equipped with two hydraulically actuated spring action multi-
ple disk brakes on each side of the running gear. These brakes are integrated into
the wheel gear and act on the same immersed, externally cooled multiple disk
brakes that are also used for the service brake. While driving the pistons press
against the springs and release the parking brake. When no pressure is applied,
the springs apply the parking brake.
If the driver actuates the parking brake switch at a vehicle road speed above 3
km/h, the BOXRUNNER coasts down to 1.5 km/h. Then the parking brake is ap-
plied. An error message is indicated on the display and this error message is
saved in the error history.

Failure of a In case of failure of one of the two brake circuits or the steering, the vehicle is
brake circuit retarded by the hydraulic brakes. In addition, the driver can safely retard the vehi-
cle to a standstill using the brake pedal acting on at least two wheels (brake cir-
cuit 2) or four wheels (brake circuit 1).

Failure of In case of failure of the diesel engine/generator, the supply of power to the fre-
diesel quency converter is interrupted. As a consequence regenerative braking will no
engine/genera longer be possible, however hydraulic braking continues to function. In these cir-
tor cumstances the driver can safely bring the vehicle to a standstill by pressing the
brake pedal hard beyond 30 % of its travel and braking hydraulically.
NA1511_10/13

Page 41 / 67
Technical description

3.5.3. Stability
The vehicle has an active safety system that provides a stability indication to the
driver on a display and sounds a buzzer.
The controller calculates the stability while driving around bends. If the tipping
moment becomes too high, the vehicle's road speed is reduced automatically.
This automatic braking only brings the vehicle to a safe driving situation if
 The spreader is in the 1-up position and
 Prior to starting to drive around the bend the road speed was reduced to
maximum 18 km/h.

3.5.4. Cabin collision protection

The cabin collision protection prevents the spreader colliding with the cabin at
certain hoisting heights and telescopic lengths.

Possible  Telescopic movement and simultaneous lifting into the range of the cabin
movements pre-limit switch
– Lifting and telescopic movement is stopped, lowering is possible.
– Once the spreader is below the range of the cabin pre-limit switch, tel-
escopic movement must be re-started.
 Lifting the spreader in 30-ft or 40-ft position and simultaneous movement
of spreader to center of vehicle
– It is possible to move to the top hoisting position without limitations.

Page 42 / 67
Technical description

3.5.5. Hoisting gear

Emergency If a hoisting gear encoder or the PLC is faulty, the hoisting travel is limited by the
limit switch emergency limit switch and the cabin collision protection limit switch.

Slack rope Two diagonally opposed rope fastenings are equipped with slack rope limit
switches. As soon as the hoisting rope is no longer under load, tensile force is no
longer applied to the hoisting rope, a spring presses up the spindle on the rope
fastening and actuates a magnetic switch. The drive is switched for 1.5 seconds
to creep speed in the lowering direction and then stopped immediately (chassis
loading).

Overload The actual motor current is measured during all operating phases and evaluated
protection by the controller. The hoisting motor is switched off if a specific maximum value is
reached to prevent an overload.
The following load cases are controlled by the PLC:
No. Operating Load Limit
mode
1 Single ≥ 40 t Warning overload
2 mode ≥ 44 t Hoisting gear is retarded as per the ramp set. Further lifting
inhibited.
Lowering is possible.
Driving is no longer possible.
3 Twin ≥ 50 t Lifting is possible. Simultaneous driving is only possible
mode after confirmation on the display menu.
4 ≥ 60 t Warning overload
5 ≥ 66 t Lifting and driving inhibited.
Lowering is possible.

Limit switch, The highest possible hoisting position of the spreader is monitored using the me-
hoisting gear chanical emergency limit switch. Mounted on the right front leg underneath the
EMERGENCY machine platform, the slideway for the yoke beam presses against the lever and
LIMIT pushes the plunger up against the spring.
First the "Cabin collision protection" limit switch is reached. This limit switch
stops the hoisting gear if the spreader is not in the middle. A collision with the
cabin is prevented. From this hoisting height, further lifting is only possible if the
spreader has not been moved in the direction of the cabin.
If the limit switch is passed, the plunger switches the "Emergency limit switch".
This switch immediately switches the hoisting gear to stop. The winch brakes are
applied without delay.
NA1511_10/13

Page 43 / 67
Technical description

Overspeed The two hoisting gear motors are equipped with encoders on which the analog
protection output is monitored. If the value set is exceeded, lifting and lowering is stopped
and the hoisting gear brakes engage.

3.5.6. Spreader
Landpins on When the spreader is set down on the container, the landpins on the twistlocks
twistlocks are pressed in by the weight of the spreader. The limit positions are monitored by
limit switches.
The twistlocks can only be locked or unlocked if the spreader is sitting correctly
on the container and all landpins are pressed.
The lifting of the spreader activates the twistlock inhibit and prevents the discard-
ing of a container that has been picked up due to a malfunction in the controller
or incorrect operation by the driver.

Centering The spreader is moved automatically to the center position by actuating the
spreader “Spreader automatic center” pushbutton.

3.5.7. Fire alarm system

Two smoke detectors are fitted in the acoustic protection hood on the machine
platform.
An alarm is sounded as soon as one of the smoke detectors is activated.
At the same time in the cabin:
 The "Rauchmelder aktiv" (Smoke detector active) message is indicated on
the display,
 The warning light switches on, and
 The buzzer sounds.

DANGER!
Risk of fatality!
Risk of burns and suffocation.

 Only fight the fire if your own safety is not placed at risk.

4.4.4. Picking up damaged containers

On the spreader there are four load hooks with hook aperture catches that can be
used to transport damaged containers. Suitable lifting gear (ropes, chains, belts)
is required.
When using the hooks the following is to be taken into account:
 The load on the spreader must be as central as possible.
 Only use lifting gear that can safely bear the weight of the load.
 The angles on the lifting gear must comply with the applicable regulations.

Maximum load bearing capacity per load hook 10 t.
