INTRODUCTION

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is a tropical fruit tree renowned for its delectably sweet
and juicy fruit. Establishing a nursery and mastering seed germination techniques are pivotal for the
successful cultivation of high-quality rambutan trees. This introduction seeks to provide an overview
of seedling rambutan and the establishment of a nursery at Quirino State University (QSU) Maddela
Campus, with a specific focus on agricultural applications.

Seedling Rambutan:

Rambutan, a beloved fruit in tropical regions, is characterized by its hairy skin and luscious,
sweet flesh. As a member of the Sapindaceae family, rambutan can be propagated through seeds or
vegetative methods like grafting and budding. While seed propagation is relatively straightforward, it
can lead to variations among seedlings, underscoring the need to carefully select superior varieties for
propagation.

The Importance of a Nursery:

A nursery serves as a controlled environment designed for the initial growth of young plants,
offering optimal conditions for their development before they are transplanted to their final
destination. Establishing a nursery for rambutan seedlings holds significant importance for several
reasons:

Genetic Purity: Nurseries facilitate the selection of seeds from desirable rambutan varieties, ensuring
the genetic integrity of the resulting plants.

Controlled Environment: Nurseries provide regulated conditions, including temperature, humidity,

and protection from pests and diseases, all of which are critical for the successful growth of seedlings.

QSU Maddela Campus Nursery:

The establishment of a rambutan nursery at QSU Maddela Campus presents a unique

opportunity for agricultural enthusiasts and students to gain hands-on experience in seedling
propagation and cultivation. The campus's tropical climate and favorable conditions create an ideal
environment for nurturing rambutan seedlings.

OBJECTIVES

1. To collect, preserve, and selectively propagate rambutan seeds from superior varieties to
ensure genetic purity and maintain desirable traits in the resulting seedlings.
2. To provide a platform for students and enthusiasts to acquire practical knowledge and skills
related to rambutan cultivation, from seed germination to nursery management, fostering
expertise in tropical fruit tree propagation.
3. To support the local rambutan industry by producing high-quality seedlings and offering
training opportunities, thus contributing to the expansion and improvement of rambutan
cultivation practices in the region.

while Seed 7 continued to thrive with 15 leaves and reached an impressive height of 8 inches.
Seed 8, although still without leaves, managed to reach a height of 4 inches, and Seed 9
displayed six leaves and a height of 7 inches. Seed 10 exhibited robust growth with eight
leaves and a height of 8 inches.

Week 6: In the sixth week, all seeds continued their healthy growth. Seed 1 had seven
leaves and reached a height of 7.5 inches, while Seed 2 displayed six leaves and grew to a
height of 4.5 inches. Seed 3 showed remarkable development with ten leaves and a height of
5.5 inches. Seed 4 continued to grow and reached a height of 2 inches, and Seed 5 grew to a
height of 2.8 inches. Seed 6 had five leaves and a height of 3 inches. Seed 7 was particularly
thriving with 18 leaves and an impressive height of 10 inches. Seed 8, still without leaves,
reached a height of 5 inches, and Seed 9 had eight leaves and reached a height of 8 inches.
Seed 10 continued to grow consistently with ten leaves and a height of 9 inches.

Week 7: In the seventh week, all seeds were flourishing. Seed 1 displayed nine leaves
and reached a height of 9.5 inches, while Seed 2 had eight leaves and reached a height of 6
inches. Seed 3 showed significant progress with twelve leaves and a height of 6.7 inches.
Seed 4 continued to grow, reaching a height of 3 inches, and Seed 5 reached a height of 3.5
inches. Seed 6 had seven leaves and a height of 4.2 inches. Seed 7 remained particularly
healthy with 21 leaves and a remarkable height of 11 inches. Seed 8, although still without
leaves, reached a height of 6 inches, and Seed 9 had ten leaves and reached a height of 9.5
inches. Seed 10 continued to exhibit robust and consistent growth with twelve leaves and a
height of 10 inches.

Week 8: In the eighth week, all seeds continued to show remarkable development.
Seed 1 had eleven leaves and reached a height of 10 inches, while Seed 2 displayed nine
leaves and grew to a height of 7 inches. Seed 3 exhibited impressive growth with fourteen
leaves and a height of 7.8 inches. Seed 4 continued to grow, reaching a height of 4 inches,
and Seed 5 reached a height of 4 inches. Seed 6 had eight leaves and a height of 5 inches.
Seed 7 remained healthy with 24 leaves and reached an impressive height of 12 inches,
displaying remarkable growth. Seed 8, although still without leaves, reached a height of 7
inches, and Seed 9 showed consistent growth with twelve leaves and a height of 10 inches.
Seed 10 continued to thrive with fourteen leaves and reached a height of 11 inches,
showcasing robust and consistent development.

PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

 Despite the overall healthy growth and development of the Rambutan seedlings during weeks
5 to 8, there were a few challenges encountered:
 Uneven Growth: Some seeds showed slower growth and fewer leaves compared to others.
Seed 4, for instance, had a slower growth rate, only reaching a height of 4 inches by week 8.
 Pests and Disease: While not explicitly mentioned, it's common for seedlings to face
challenges related to pests and diseases. Any such issues should be monitored and addressed.

RESULTS:

Despite the challenges, the Rambutan seedlings have shown remarkable resilience and growth
throughout the four-week period. Each seed exhibited positive progress in terms of leaf development
and height. By week 8, the seedlings were thriving, with an increasing number of leaves and robust
growth.

CONCLUSION

The consistent and healthy development of the Rambutan seedlings is a promising sign of
their potential to become strong and fruitful trees. While some variations in growth rate were
observed, it's important to continue monitoring and providing the necessary care to address any
challenges that may arise, such as slower growth or potential pest and disease issues. The nursery at
Quirino State University (QSU) Maddela Campus provides an ideal environment for nurturing these
seedlings, and the objectives of maintaining genetic purity, offering practical knowledge to students
and enthusiasts, and supporting the local Rambutan industry are all well on their way to being
achieved. The hands-on experience gained at the QSU Maddela Campus nursery will contribute
significantly to the expansion and improvement of Rambutan cultivation practices in the region,
ensuring the continued success of this tropical fruit tree.
