Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

It's challenging to focus on learning when you're sweltering in a hot classroom or

freezing in a cold one. In many schools, a wall fan was the most commonly used. A wall

fan is a sort of electric fan intended to attach to a wall. The body of the fan usually

mounts flush with the wall, creating a streamlined look. Wall fan come in a variety

sizes and styles, and can be used to a cool room, circulate air, or exhaust fumes

(Johnson, 2022). By installing a wall fan, you may circulate air conditioning, add instant

evaporative air movement, and free up floor space.

Automatic wall fan speed fan controllers have become increasingly popular in

recent years due to their ability to efficiently regulate room temperature and reduce

energy consumption. These controllers are designed to automatically adjust the speed

of a fan based on the ambient temperature of the room, thereby maintaining a

comfortable temperature and reducing the need for manual adjustments. The

development of such controllers involves a combination of hardware and software

engineering, as well as an understanding of the principles of temperature control and

feedback mechanisms. Researchers in this field are exploring new technologies and

methodologies to optimize the performance of these controllers, including the use of

machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to improve the accuracy of

temperature sensing and control. This research has the potential to significantly reduce

energy usage in buildings and homes, contributing to a more sustainable future.

The researchers noticed that the students at Tagoloan Community College feel
2

uncomfortable due to high temperature inside the classroom, which affects their

academic performance. For many educational institutions, lacking of adequate air-

conditioned classroom is the common problem that every student facing that can lead

to a notable effect on their academic performances. Especially during noontime class,

they are unable to think straight due to an unmaintained room temperature. Another

problem that the researchers want to work on is the students’ forgetfulness to switch off

the wall fan after the class hour. Most of the students tend to forget to turn off the

appliances commonly the fan, which is a waste of energy. Moreover, the researcher

also noticed that some of the instructors from engineering department bringing mini fan

just to bring relief and blown comfort in hot temperature of the classroom.

Students’ academic performance will significantly improve and energy would be

saved by implementing this study. McGuire (2016) shows, unsurprisingly, that

temperature does have an effect on student attention span. Studies have indicated that

lower classroom temperatures and improved air ventilation improve learning ability and

student performance by as much as 10 to 20 percent. Students working in classrooms

with lower temperatures were shown to be more alert and able to work more quickly

while making fewer mistakes. Furthermore, a wall fan must be energy-saving by being

innovative enough to turn itself off automatically when it detects no human presence.

As studied by Kaushik & et. al, (2018) researchers made an automatic fan that

aimed to control the speed of the fan automatically using Arduino, temperature, and

humidity sensors. Normally, fan speed needs to be manually controlled every time, but

the researchers’ idea would automatically adjust according to its surroundings.

According to (Vaibhav & Gavish, 2019), the design and simulation of a novel fan speed

control system based on room temperature using Pulse width Modulation Technique.
3

The duty cycle is made to vary according to the room temperature and the fan speed is

controlled accordingly. This paper elucidates how the autonomous speed control of fan

is done based on data from the temperature sensor. The design proposed here is

appropriate according to the modern lifestyle.

In line with this, the study aims to innovate an automatic fan speed controller with

motion sensor and humidity sensor to control and maintain the classroom’s temperature

that is beneficial to engineering department students and instructors. In the allotted 5

months the researchers will carry out the study.

Project Objectives

This study seeks to propose Automatic fan speed controller, with the following

objective.

General Objectives

The general objectives of the study are to innovate an Automatic Wall Fan Speed

Controller with Motion sensor and Humidity censor which is controlled by Arduino.

Specific Objectives

1. Determine the requirements for automatic wall fan speed controller.

2. Design an automatic wall fan speed controller using motion,

humidity sensor, and Arduino.

3. Developing an automatic wall fan speed controller for

maintaining classroom temperature.

4. Performing functional and operational testing using multi-tester for the

4

automatic fan controller.

5. Evaluating the functionality, reliability and craftsmanship of the automatic fan

speed controller.

Significance of the Study

This study will help the school to maintain proper ventilation of room

temperature. The current study aimed the fan speed to be manually controlled every time

but by using this idea, the speed of the fan will be automatically adjusted according to its

surroundings. This is to ideally ensure that the automatic command of the electric fan in

entering the classroom will initiate with speed controller depending on its temperature.

This study will beneficial the following group or people:

The Local Government Unit of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental – this study may serve

as a paradigm shift in looking at local resources of having an automatic wall fan

with speed controller in a non-air conditioned office.

Tagoloan Community College – The results of this study will act as a guide for

these institutions as they create the innovative and logical wall fan for the

classroom.

Consumers – this study will be beneficial to the consumers because this device can

automatically adjust the speed level base on temperature and applicable in an office

room.

Instructors – This study will be beneficial to the instructors because it can improve

their way of teaching due to absence of temperature disturbance.

Engineering Technology Students – for the engineering students major in Electronic

5

Technology, they may be able to improve their academic performance.

Future Researcher – The study will provide for the next researchers that they may

broaden the knowledge about the automatic fan speed controller.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study limits its coverage in the classroom of engineering department in Tagoloan

Community College. The respondents of this study are engineering students and

instructors. The study focuses on how convenient the wall fan temperature and its

speed controller. It manages the temperature of a classroom, if the weather is warmth

the room temperature rises and the students begun to be uncomfortable and feels

sweltering, the fan immediately speed up. The colder the weather the temperature of

fan speed decreases and will probably stop. This machine is very helpful to students,

teachers and other people that needed to have proper ventilation in a classroom.

Additionally, it proposes solution regarding the problem of forgetfulness of switching off

the fan after class-hour.

The study will focus on the hardware and software design of the controller,

including the use of motion sensor, humidity sensors, and motor driver modules. The

study delimits that the four wall fans are in series connections, if only one or few

people enter in classroom the four wall fans work simultaneously. Also, the user

cannot choose their desire speed levels. The study will be limited to using a specific

type of sensors.

The impact of temperature on mood reduces memory and cognitive function, which has

an impact on learning ability. It directly converts electrical energy to thermal energy

6

using an electrically operated switch, has the advantages of environmentally friendly,

very compact, high reliability, no moving parts (except the fans), and it can be easily

integrated. Multi tester analog and digital used to test the components properly operate.

In this study the researcher used a 5volts 4 module relay that serves as switch button then

the Arduino uno mega which used to command the relay and the motion and humidity

sensor that commands the Arduino.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Temperature Controlled DC Fan using Microcontroller

As stated by Soren & Gupta, (2022). The electric fan naturally switches the

speed as indicated by the environment temperature changes. Generally, electronic

gadgets create enough heat due to internal loss. There is a necessity to decrease heat to

so that electronics devices won’t lose their characteristic. The heat can be minimized in

various methods. One of the methods is temperature dependent dc fan implementing

microcontroller. When environment temperature sensed by the sensor crosses the

threshold value fan is switched on and temperature is reduced. The fan will remain on

till the temperature reduces below the threshold value. This general idea is used in this

project.

The aforementioned Soren & Gupta, (2022). The electric fan's speed adjusts

with the temperature. Internal loss heats up electronic devices. Electronics need less

heat to function properly. Various strategies reduce heat. Temperature-sensitive dc fan

microcontroller is one technique. The fan turns on when the sensor detects a

temperature above the threshold value. The fan runs until the temperature drops below

the set point. Project uses this broad idea.

8

Pedestal Fans Vs Wall Mounted Fans

According to Polar India (2021) Ceiling fans are always the minimum

requirement in a room but to add to the comfortability, you can choose pedestal fans.

But when space is an issue there is nothing better than wall-mounted fans. These fans

work a little differently from the usual ceiling fans. While a ceiling fan circulates air,

wall-mounted fans push air around the area they are placed. The basic advantage of

wall-mounted fans is they help to save a lot of floor space, circulate air, and enhance

instant evaporative air movement.

The Polar India (2021). These comparisons helped the researchers decide which

type of fan to employ. Because wall fans take up less space than stand fans.

Climate of the Philippines

Base on Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services

Administration (2020) based on the average of all weather stations in the Philippines,

excluding Baguio, the mean annual temperature is 26.6 °C. The coolest months fall in

January with a mean temperature of 25.5 °C while the warmest month occurs in May

with a mean temperature of 28.3 °C. Latitude is an insignificant factor in the variation

of temperature while altitude shows greater contrast in temperature.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services

Administration (2020). These statistics provided the researchers with an approximation

of the precise temperature that will be applied in temperature sensor.

Design and Implementation of Automatic Room Temperature Controlled Fan using

Arduino Uno and LM35 Heat Sensor

As eloquently stated by (International Journal of Engineering Creativity &

Innovation, 2019) speed level manually when the room’s temperature changed. So, the

automatic fan system that automatically changes the speed level according to

temperature changes is recommended to be built for solving this problem. Hence, the

objectives for this project are to enable the electric fan to automatically change the

speed level according to temperature changes and develop an automatic fan system that

can change the speed level due to the environment temperature changes.

The aforementioned International Journal of Engineering Creativity &

Innovation (2019) project are to make it so that the electric fan's speed level changes

automatically when the temperature does and to make an automatic fan system that can

change the speed level when the temperature does.

Humidity Based Automated Room Temperature Controller Using IoT

The study conducted by Farah & Sharmin et.al, (2019) automation is achieved

through using a microcontroller which facilitates auto room temperature controlling

and toggle switching. The electric fan adjusts the speed dynamically depending on the

variations in the temperature of the environment. This electrical hardware fan system

includes a combination of sensor, controller, driver and motor with the incorporation of

embedded guided programming. The system takes the temperature sensor data, passes

it to the microcontroller and controls the AC heater in the output and displays the

output status in the LCD screen. By automating all these processes, it is possible to

control room temperature and humidity according to the user's necessity.

automatically using Arduino, temperature, and humidity sensors. Fan speed needs to be

manually controlled every time but by using this idea the speed of the fan will be

automatically adjusted according to the surrounding environment. The project is based

on the concept of the Internet of Things (IOT). A simple strategy to automatically

control the speed of the fan using DHT22 sensor. According to the temperature sensed

by the temperature and humidity sensor the resistance of the fan will be adjusted to

change the fan speed.

The researchers determine that Arduino, temperature and humidity sensor will

form an idea to control the fan speed and adjust according to its changes in

environment of a classroom.

cooling motors and transmissions; for cooling and drying people, materials, or
30

products; for exhausting dust and noxious fumes; for conveying light materials;

for forced draft in steam boilers; and in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning

systems.

 HC-S4501 – used to measure an object's distance via ultrasonic sound waves. An

ultrasonic sensor transmits and receives ultrasonic pulses using a transducer to

determine the proximity of a person.

 DHT11-TEMPERATURE and HUMIDITY SENSOR - used for a variety of

purposes, including determining temperature and humidity levels in HVAC

(heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.

source to the correct voltage, current, and frequency to power the load.

 4CH RELAY KIT GIZMO - used to enable the management of heavy current

loads with a modest quantity of electrical current. A tiny number of current flows

through the coil when voltage is applied, while a greater quantity of current flows

through the contacts to regulate the electrical load.

 FLAT CORD - used to enable the encasing of power, signal, video, data, and

even pneumatic tubing in a single flat profile, allowing for compact designs of

electrical conductors and tubing. They offer less space and weight and incredibly

long lifetimes by doing away with the several layers of fillers, shielding, and

jacketing that are utilized in round cables.

 DIGITAL THERMOMETER - used to confirm that a smart temperature

transmitter is calibrated properly and works well under flowing situations.

31

 ARDUINO MEGA - The Arduino will act as the controller for all the other parts

of the automated fan controller; it will be the primary component and determine if

the fans will operate and what amount of fan should be provided based on the

information the Arduino receives from the sensor.

Features:

 It is powered by 230 V AC.

 The benefits of the fan speed controller are that it employs a humidity sensor to

automatically regulate the temperature.

 Motion sensor switch on or shut off the fan; by employing this function, power

consumption may be reduced.
