Proper Temperature and Control of Temperature for an Ideal Learning Setting

Rationale

In a tropical country like the Philippines being subjected in a hot weather is not new to us, some
of the students both in public and private schools often brings with them a portable electric fan
and or a fan to combat the warm temperature if you’re lucky enough and has some budget with
you, you can apply in an air-conditioned room but for some people who can’t afford it they can
stick with a normal room. Proper ventilation and temperature plays a vital role in learning one
consistent research finding across individuals of all ages is that the temperature in which a
person works affects engagement levels and overall productivity—including student
achievement. Anyone that has worked in a classroom or office that is too hot or too cold knows
how difficult it can be when trying to work when the temperature is uncomfortable.

Dunn and Dunn of LearningStyles.net say that when temperatures are too hot or too cold, the
brain is constantly reminding the body to do something about that condition. Because of the
constant interruption, it is hard for the student to stay focused.

Another study done by an undergrad at Loyola University found that air temperature has an
impact on memory ability. Using a computer generated memory test, 52 students randomly
participated in memory tests in rooms with varying temperatures. Room temperatures were set at
72, 80 and 64 degrees F. The outcome showed that in the environment with temperatures of 80
or 64 degrees, memory was impacted negatively. Test scores were significantly higher in the
classroom where the temperature was 72 degrees.

Students in both the colder and warmer rooms tested poorly compared to those in the control
room which was maintained at around 70 degrees. While the data may not be enough to explain
the magnitude of the effect, or give an exact temperature, it is a good supporting case among
other studies.

A similar study at Cornell University shares the same results with the optimum temperature
being between 70-78 degrees. This study continues its research to explain why climate might
play such a significant role. The discomfort in your environment is not the only problem that
affects your memory and learning capabilities. Your mind becomes focused on maintaining its
body temperature, either cooling or heating, in a room that’s too cold or too hot – taking away
from your concentration. Warm rooms can make you feel tired and sleepy. Colder rooms may
have a shock factor to help you feel awake, but your body is having to use its energy to keep you
warm instead.

Lower test scores, decrease in memory ability, lack of energy and losing focus are just a few
symptoms of too hot or too cold temperature conditions in the classroom. Students and teachers
suffer the same symptoms

According to the best analyses, the ideal temperature range for effective learning in reading and
mathematics is between 68º and 74º.
To maintain such a temperature in every classroom within a school, teachers typically need to be
able to control the temperature in their own classroom. At the very least, teachers should be able
to control the temperature of small blocks of classrooms that receive the same amount of sunlight
and have similar exposures to outside temperatures. Installation of an exhaust fan can be one way
to prevent the hotness of air in the classroom, adding some electric fan can also do the job.

room settings

Cost Budget

The cheapest exhaust fan in the market cost 999 pesos which is a reasonable price for an exhaust
fan if the school has an enough budget for an air cooler it would be nice to install some to help to
regulate the temperature installing an exhaust fan or air cooler is not that pricey it can be done
for a span of 2 days if the installer is quick it can cost roughly 2,000 pesos for an installer.

Expected outcome

A better grade or understanding for every lessons because as what I tackled earlier a good
temperature helps for the improvement of each students learning abilities and retention it doesn’t
need to be extravagant you don’t need to install a pricey room regulator to regulates the
temperature because at the end of the day ideal studying habits for someone can be as different
as the next individual. For optimum productivity, a variety of factors should be considered –
your environment being an important one. Consider not only the temperature but the lighting and
noises around you. Putting on a sweater or using a small fan is not a bad idea to try to reach a
nice balance. Finding the right combination of what will work best for you can be hard as you
work to improve your studying skills. Just remember that maintaining a moderate temperature
can also help you maintain good grades.
