TASK 21-50-00-220
2. Environmental Control Unit Detailed Inspection
A. Complete a Detailed Inspection of the Environmental Control Units
CAUTION: When you do work on or around the environmental control unit after engine shutdown, you must let the
environmental control unit become cool or personnel must use protective clothing. Bleed air
components and ducts become EXTREMELY HOT during and immediately after engine operation.
(1) Open the tailcone access door.
(2) Inspect the environmental control units as follows:
(a) On airplanes with the Sunstrand units installed, examine the oil level at the sight glass on each air cycle machine.
NOTE: Safe oil level is approximately at midpoint in the sight glass.
NOTE: A mirror and flashlight may be required to examine the fluid level in the upper air cycle
machine.
(b) On airplanes with the Hamilton Standard units installed, examine the oil level through the see-through sump.
(3) Inspect the environmental control unit installation for security of installation, including all attaching fasteners and brackets,
correct safety wiring, cleanliness, corrosion, cracks, wear, dents, signs of overheating, or other types of damage.
(4) Examine the lines and hoses for security of attachment, including all fittings, kinks, cracks, correct routing and clamping
with no signs of chafes, indication of leaks, cracked fittings, and any other apparent damage.
(5) Close the tailcone access door.

TASK 21-50-00-160
3. Water Separator Restoration (Cleaning)
CAUTION: When you do work on or around the environmental control unit after engine shutdown, you must let the
environmental control unit become cool or personnel must use protective clothing. Bleed air components
and ducts become EXTREMELY HOT during and immediately after engine operation.
NOTE: There are water separators for each environmental control unit which require cleaning or replacement of the
coalescer cloth at regular intervals.
A. Special Tools and Equipment
(1) Airplanes -0001 thru -0104
(a) Coalescer Cloth
(b) O-ring (Water Separator)
(2) Airplanes -0105 and On
(a) Mild Detergent - Commercially Available
(b) Coalescer Cloth
(c) O-ring (Water Separator)
(d) Petrolatum - VV-P-236
B. Clean and/or Replace Coalescer Cloths (Airplanes -0001 Thru -0104) (Refer to Figure 602).
(1) Get access to the water separator through the tailcone maintenance access door.
(2) Remove the band clamp that secures the cover to the water separator.
(3) Disconnect the lower clamp on the U-duct at the end of the cover.
(4) Remove the cover, U-duct, and O-ring.
(5) Remove the coalescer cloth.
(6) Examine the coalescer cloth for contamination and/or damage.
(a) Replace the coalescer cloth if contaminated or damaged.
(7) Clean coalescer cloth with warm water and household detergent.
(8) Rinse thoroughly with clean water and air dry.
(9) Install the coalescer cloth over the retaining screen.
(a) Make sure the elastic band edges are firmly in place and the NAP side of the coalescer is on the inside.
(10) Lubricate new O-ring with petrolatum VV-P-236 or oil (MIL-PRF-23699) and install on the water separator.
(11) Install cover with U-duct to water separator and secure with band clamp.
(a) Make sure that O-ring is correctly seated at the flanges.
(12) Torque the band clamp 5 to 15 inch-pounds. Refer to Chapter 20, Torque Data - Maintenance Practices.
(13) Secure the lower clamp on the U-duct.
(14) Examine the water separators for correct installation and general condition.
(15) Close and latch the tailcone maintenance access door.
C. Clean and/or Replace Coalescer Cloths (Airplanes -0105 and On) (Refer to Figure 603).
(1) Get access to the water separator through the tailcone maintenance access door.
(2) Loosen and remove the V-band coupling from the coalescer cover.
(3) Remove the cover and then examine the coalescer for contamination and/or damage.
(4) Stretch the elastic edges sufficiently to slide the coalescer from the retaining screen.
(5) The coalescer may be cleaned if damage is not detected. If damage is detected, replace the coalescer.
(6) Clean or replace the coalescer.
(7) If the coalescer is not damaged, wash it in mild soap solution, rinse thoroughly, and air dry.
CAUTION: Air dry the coalescer without wringing or scrubbing.
(8) Install the coalescer over the retaining screen. Make sure the elastic band edges are firmly in place and the NAP side of
the coalescer is on the INSIDE.
(9) Install a preformed packing (O-ring) and the coalescer cover.
(10) Install the V-band coupling and clamp latch.
(11) Torque the V-band coupling to 20 to 25 inch-pounds (2.26 to 2.82 N-m). Refer to Chapter 20, Torque Data - Maintenance
Practices.
(12) Install the insulation cap over the coalescer cover.
NOTE: The clamp latch brackets can bottom out and be at full torque.
(13) Examine the water separators for correct installation and general condition.
(14) Close and latch the tailcone maintenance access door.
