patterns are important skills needed for learning concepts related to an arithmetic
sequence.
As you go through this module, you are expected to:
1. Generate and describe patterns.
2. Determine the nth term of a sequence.
3. Describe an arithmetic sequence and find its nth term.

What is a sequence?

A sequence or progression is an ordered list of numbers formed according to
some patterns. The numbers in each sequence are called the terms of the
sequence.
It is a function whose domain is the finite set {1, 2, 3, …, n} or the infinite set
{1, 2, 3,
A finite sequence is a set of numbers that includes only the first n natural
numbers, while infinite sequence is a set of numbers that includes all-natural
numbers satisfying the condition. Example #1.

The above sequence is a finite sequence whose a1 (1st Term)


= 4, a2 (2nd Term) = 7, a3 (3rd term) =10, a4
(4th term) = 13, there are four (4) terms in the given sequence. Have
you observed the pattern?

Example # 2:
In the sequence 3, 8, 13, 18, . . .
This is an example of an Infinite sequence because the number of terms cannot
be determined since the terms are infinite.
What is a1 =?
If your answer is 3, you are right!

The expression on which defines the sequence is called the general term of
the sequence.
Example #3.
Write the finite sequence defined by an= 2n -1, for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
If an= 2n -1, then a1= 2(1) – 1 = 1 a2= 2(2) – 1 = 3
a3= 2(3) – 1 = 5 a4= 2(4) – 1 = 7 a5= 2(5) – 1 = 9
Thus, the finite sequence is 1, 3, 5, 7, 9.

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

An Arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is


obtained by a adding a constant called the common difference.
An arithmetic sequence is also known as an arithmetic progression. We can tell
whether a sequence is an arithmetic sequence or not by finding the difference
between any two successive terms.

The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is given by


an = a1 + (n-1) d
where: a1 = the first term,
an = the nth term n = the
number of terms d = the
common difference

Examples:

1. Find the 18th term of the arithmetic sequence 3, 10, 17, 24, …

Solution:
Given: d = 10-3 = 7
a1 = 3
n = 18
Using the formula: an = a1 + (n-1) d
a18 = 3 + (18-1) 7
= 3 + (17) 7
= 3 + 119
= 122
Therefore, the 18th term of the sequence is 122.

2. If the first term of an arithmetic sequence is 5 and the 7 th term is 17, find the
common difference.
Solution:
Given: a1 = 5
a7 = 17
n=7
Find: d
Using the formula: an = a1 + (n-1) d
17 = 5 + (7-1) d
17 = 5 + (6) d
17 = 5 + 6d
17- 5 = 6d
12 = 6d
12/6 = 6d/6
2=d
Therefore, the common difference of the sequence is 2.

3. In the arithmetic sequence 8, 5, 2, -1, . . ., which term is -25?


Solution:
Given: a1 = 8
an = -25
d =-3
Find: n
Using the formula: an = a1 + (n-1) d
-25 = 8 +( n-1) -3
-25 = 8 - 3n +3 (using distributive property)
-25 = 11 - 3n
-25 – 11 = -3n
-36 = -3n (Dividing both sides of the equation by -3)
12 = n
Therefore, -25 is the 12th term of the sequence.

4. If the 16th term of an arithmetic sequence is 48 and the common difference is


3, find the first term.

Solution:
Given: an = 48
d=3
n = 16
Find: a1
Using the formula: an = a1 + (n-1) d
48 = a1 + (16-1)3
48 = a1 + (15) 3
48 = a1 + 45
48- 45 = a1
3 = a1
Therefore, the first term of the sequence is 3.
