LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS

INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

EXPERIMENT ON
MANIFESTATIONS OF CHEMICAL REACTION

Performed by Group 4
BS Marine Biology Block 2

I. Learning Objectives:

At the end of the activity, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the different manifestations of chemical reactions.
2. Explain the reasons behind their observations of a chemical reaction.
3. Predict the products of chemical reactions through the observed manifestations

II. Concept:
Chemical reactions are processes by which atoms or groups of atoms are
redistributed resulting in a formation of substances with different molecular formula.
Some manifestations that a chemical reaction has happened are: change in color,
formation of precipitate, evolution of gas, change in temperature, spark or explosion. The
scenario in a chemical reaction is written in a chemical equation.

III. Apparatus and Reagents:

Baking soda test tubes
Vinegar test tube rack
Copper sulfate solution pipette
Zinc sulfate solution aspirator/rubber bulb

1. Label the test tubes with 1, 2, 3 and 4.

2. On test tubes 1 and 2, place 3 mL copper sulfate solution.
3. To test tube 1, add 1 mL of sodium chromate solution. Gently swirl the test tube.
4. To test tube 2, add 1 mL of barium chloride solution and gently swirl the test tube.

5. Observe the resulting solutions. and fill-up Table 1.
Consider the following in writing your observation:
 What is the color of the resulting solution?
 Are there any precipitate?
 Are there any bubbles formed?
 Is there any heat or cooling effect when you feel the sides or bottom of the test
tube?
6. On test tubes 3 and 4, place 3 mL zinc sulfate solution.
7. To test tube 3, add 1 mL sodium chromate solution and gently swirl the test tube.
8. To test tube 4, add 1 mL barium chloride solution and gently swirl the test tube.
9. Observe the resulting solutions and fill-up Table 1.

Vinegar and baking soda:

1. Place 5 mL of vinegar in a test tube and add a pinch of baking soda.
2. Write your observations on Table 2.
