Abstract: Translating of Holy Qur'ān is not an easy task especially when it is translated
into prose and poetry. Owing to the fact that, in this genre, not only translator is obliged
to produce the nearest meaning of the original, additionally he has to focus on meter,
rhythm and prosody too. Not withstanding the difficulties, number of subcontinent poets,
famous and unknown, worked in this genre and converted Urdu translations of Holy
Qur'ān into poetic form. Among them, Semāb Akbarbādī (d: 1951) is a prominent name
as a laureate and acclaimed poet of his time, with an outstanding poetic and prose works.
Poetic translation of Holy Qur'ān by Semāb Akbarbādī is titled ‘Waḥī Manẓūm’. With
the appearance of first part (para 30), in very short period of time, this poetic translation
was acknowledged by religious scholars of that era and considered as a master piece of
this genre. This translation, authored from 1944 to 1945, is an idiomatic, comprehensive
and in Mat̲h̲nawī (poetic form) comprised on 971 pages. In this research article an
attempt has made to analyze briefly, how authentic and exact meaning of Holy Qur'ān
conveyed by ‘Waḥī Manẓūm' (a poetic translation)? Furthermore, this research study
inclusively examined the Semāb Akbarbādī work ‘Waḥī Manẓūm' from poetic principles,
aspects and elements like rhythm and meter. By taking deep insight into this work, it
seems that author is failed to avoid some mistakes related to translation and other poetical
aspects which are explained in this article.

20th century, he was a remarkable name among the literary circle of that time. To
fulfill his extreme love and romance for poetry, he left his job in 1921 from the
railway department and settle down in the city of Agra, where he established an
institution with the name Qasr-ul-Adab. Naistan, was first book of his rhyming
poems that was published. He also translated Masnavi Maulana Rum from
Persian to Urdu with title, Ilham e Manzum, in a very short period of time, on
the request of Maulvi Firozuddin, the founder of Feroz Sons Limited Lahore. In
his literary career of 50 years, he had published more than 300 books. He had also
written about Sīrah of holy Prophet (Peace be upon him). But his greatest
achievement is rhyming translation of Holy Quran, named Wahy-e Manzūm.
After the partition of subcontinent, he migrated to Pakistan and settled in
Karachi where he was died in 1951. He had written rhyming translation of Holy
Qur’an in last 7 years of his life. He had consulted Urdu translation of Shah
Abdul Qadir Muhadith Dehlvi and Shaikh ul Hind Maulana Mahmood Hassan.
As Seemab Akbar abadi was so conscious and worried about the authenticity of
his translation, he brought his translation to many prominent scholars of Islam
i.e Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, Maulana Saeed Ahmed Akbar Abadi,
Maulana Muhammad Hifz-ur- Rahman Sewharvi, Khwaja Hasan Nizami,
Molanā Atiq-ur- Rahman Usmani. But most probably, he did not consult them
for complete translation but only few chapters of last para. The complete
rhyming translation of Holy Qur’an was first published in 1981 by Seemab
Academy Karachi after the death of Ashiq Hussain Seemab Akbar Abadī. The
names of twelve prominent Qur’anic scholars and translators, are mentioned on
last pages, as a certificate of the authenticity of it's rhyming translation including
Maulana Ahmed Ali Lahori, Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madni, Khwaja Hasan
Nizami, Maulana Saeed Ahmed Akbar Abadi. The total number of rhyming
translation pages is 994. Qur’anic verses are written on one page, whereas
rhyming translation is written opposite to it and can be seen together. It should
be kept in mind, at many places, author could not justify the exact meaning of
Qur’anic verses due to certain issues. At some places, his rhyming translation
only gives a short form of translation, i.e in chapter, verse 20. He also used
brackets and punctuation marks to adjust it’s translation with metrical structure,
i.e chapter 33, verse 1-3. At some places it seems, instead of conveying the right
meaning he mistakenly reflected wrong meaning of Qur’anic verses, i.e chapter
no. 33 verse 1-3. At few places author of this rhyming translation left some verses
untranslated, for example, chapter no. 35 verse no. 12. Furthermore, it is quite
natural, that this rhyming translation have many mistakes because it is
unprecedented work done by author, which have no match to any other work of
this type. In short, it cannot be described as an aunthetic version of Qur’anic

translation that can be read by any ordinary reader, provided that, only those
who have a good test for poetry can consult it. In concluding remarks, I shall say
this rhyming translation is a notable literary contribution to Quranic literature in
Urdu language, for what Seemab Akbar Abadi, shall be remembered for a long
time.

اﻟﺴﺪس ِ َّ وﱰﱮﺑﻮﻳ ِ ﻟِ ُ ِ ّﻞ َ ِ ٍ

ﻓﺎن َ ٓ ﻓﲎﱮﻣ ِ اﻟﺜُّﻠ ُ
اﻟﺴﺪس﴾
