Attempt all questions and submit in single pdf file.

1. Recall the correct answers for the following questions: (2X2)

A. The ultimate consolidation settlement of a structure resting on a soil decreases with

increase in initial void ratio. (True/False)

B. Compressibility of sandy soil is much greater than that of clayey soil. (True/False)

2. If the time required for 50% consolidation of a sample of clay with single drainage is

20 mins, then determine the time required to consolidate the same sample with same

degree of consolidation but with double drainage. (4)

3. Discuss the second stage of consolidation. (3)

4. Illustrate Triaxial test. (5)

5. A normally consolidated clay specimen reaches 50% consolidation in 30 mins when the

pressure is increased from 100 kPa to 200 kPa. The equilibrium void ratios for these

pressures are 1.02 and 0.91 respectively. Assuming average thickness as 20.2 mm,

determine co-efficient of permeability and compression index. (4)
